60GB PS3 Price Cut Not Just a 'Fire Sale'

Heffenfeffer writes "Those excited about the $100 price cut that the 60 GB PS3 recently received should act quickly — according to an interview from SCEE president David Reeves: 'All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.' When asked if the 60GB PS3 would be no more after the fire sale, he confirmed, 'In America, yes ... what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD $599 version with one game.'" Meanwhile, the EU won't be getting the 80GB system at all. Instead, they'll be getting a new starter pack bundle pack with two games and an extra controller for the same cost as the current system on its own (£425, or $862). Update: 07/13 17:17 GMT by Z : Okay ... it's really challenging to understand what's going on when Sony as an entity is saying two different things. Despite the above coming from a Sony executive, it looks like this is completely untrue. Says a Sony of America spokesperson: "SCEA has reacted with puzzlement to the European perspective, suggesting that there may have been an incorrect interpretation. The spokesperson said, 'Those quotes from David Reeves are not accurate.'"

I wouldn't touch 360, not until I can get one for $100 on e-bay. Warranty, my ass. I want to spend $500 on a piece of equipment that in all likelihood will fail, and then be without it for months until Microsoft (we ARE talking about Microsoft here, don't forget that) gets around to replacing it. Awesome.

Keep spreading the FUD, FUDster. They haven't crippled anything, software emulation for backward compatibility works just fine. It's been in the Euro consoles since day one. If you have an HDTV software emulation is BETTER than hardware emulation because software has upscaling.

Software emulation of the PS2 games is BETTER than the hardware Emotion Engine for the vast majority of users. Software emulation allows for 1080p upscaling, with the hardware emulation you're stuck at 480p. Europe has received only software emulation in their PS3s and there are few to no issues reported.

Bottom line is software emulation on PS3 works better and has more features than hardware.

    Hey FanBoy!

Since when is 90%+ compatible with PS1/2 titles, crippled? Really, you're a fucking dick. Aww, come on. You know you are. Even though they've continued to improve compatibility on the software-emulation PS3's, and even when there ARE problems, they don't generally affect game play. And yet you're still a bitch even though you apparently have no problem with Microsoft's 35% compatibility rate?

Please, go play your XboxWii60, and stay the hell out of the PS3 discussions. You don't own one, you said you wouldn't buy one, so what's the fucking problem?
