Sony CEO Confirms Limited $499 PS3 Stock
If you were confused about yesterday's stock announcement, you wouldn't be the only one. Thankfully Kaz Harai, SCEI CEO, has clarified the situation: the $499 60GB PlayStation 3 is a limited offering. They'll only be selling it here in the states until their current stock of the system is cleared out, at which point the only SKU remaining in the states will be the $599 80GB + Motorstorm bundle. The catch is that there is probably enough stock in hand for several months of sales at this price; hence the confusion yesterday about a 'fire sale'. Hirai confirmed this to a Norwegian videogame news site, and the video of the interview is available online. For some perspective, Next Generation has a commentary piece on this strange matter. "Now Sony looks as though it's been spinning consumers. The smart thing to have done would have been to come out and say that the 60Gig version is being discounted and discontinued, and that the bells-n-whistles PS3 at $599 is better value than ever. That didn't happen, and what many have seen as a pretty successful E3 for Sony has been marred by confusion over the future of the platform's strategy. So in those meetings next week, Sony will have cause to look back and consider how things might have been done better."

The only people dumb enough to buy 360s are the most hardcore existing Xbox owners in the US. And the hardware problems and crappy graphics in Halo 3, Forza 2, and other 360 graphics turds is leading to slower sales than the first Xbox disaster for Microsoft.

Too bad reality is actually like this:
1) Move manufacturing over to the cheaper in bulk 80 gig drives and the less expensive EE software emulation PS3s
2) Introduce a 599 80 gig with Motorstorm bundle in August
3) Sell through existing 60 gig PS3s while continuing to sell the 80 gig
4) Once the 60 gigs are all sold drop the 80 gig Motorstorm bundle down to 549 and an bundless 80 gig at 499
Shooting themselves in the foot? They just utterly dominated E3 and the PS3 is a top seller or sold out at stores all over the US.

What is funny is how badly the 360 is bombing. The US is supposed to be the 360's one strong territory? You have to wonder if the 30-40 percent failure rate and shitty graphics in games like Halo 3 is having something to do with the poor 360 sales? Naw....couldn't be...

PS2 emulation is about 90 percent for EE software emulated European PS3s and almost every firmware update is adding new games. At the rate Sony is updating games it is very likely that PS2 emulation will be up in the 95 percent range this year.
And, unlike Xbox emulation on the 360, those 90 percent of PS2 games run exactly the same as with real EE equipped PS3s.

The PS3 is selling at roughly the same rate as the PS1 and PS2 were worldwide...Slightly faster than the PS1, and slightly slower than the PS2.
The 80 gig will be moved down to 499 when they have sold through the 60 gigs. Are you really that fucking stupid not to understand that?

Anyone playing FF XI on a PS3?
People still play that game?! WHY?! World of Warcraft has been out for almost three years now! Good God man, upgrade! You can buy a PC that'll play WoW great for less than a PS3, and WoW doesn't charge you extra for having more than one character.
Or if WoW isn't quite your thing, there are plenty of MMORPGs that are better than FFXI. FFXI is an old, outdated game that hasn't been able to modernize because its tied to the PS2. Try a modern MMORPG and see what you're missing! (Macros, keybindings, regions that use more than one texture, armor sets that aren't identical, more than five races, actual character customization versus a preset level pattern...)
Seriously, there's a reason Sony didn't bother continuing to support FFXI on the new PS2s.
