Users can generate lists of every edit to Wikipedia which has been made from a particular IP address range. The tool has already uncovered a number of interesting edits, such as one from the corporate offices of Diebold which removed large sections of content critical of their electronic voting machines. A Wired story provides more detail and Threat Level is running a contest to see who can come up with the most interesting Wikipedia spin job."

He mentioned it, I imagine, because of the surprise and amusement previously expressed that a CIA analyst would care enough about Buffy to edit that page. Implication being that CIA analysts are different enough from 'normal' people who are non-CIA analysts that such an interest is surprising. GP's point was that it shouldn't be surprising, as the distinction between people who are and people who are not CIA analysts is smaller than was originally implied. Certainly, in any case, smaller than your obnoxious counter example of mass murderers and dictators. To your question, yes, it is a powerful instinct in people to demonize those who are perceived to be 'the enemy'. Thus, it never hurts to point out the humanity of people in that group, unless the enemy as such is quite behyond humanization (such as the aforementioned dictators and mass murderers).

Well, apparently the OP thought it was extraordinary enough to point out.
Even more, I think it's important to realize that CIA agents (among others) are more similar to you and I than some of us might expect, and can thus be made to realize the wrongness of what they're doing.

The OP did a fine job of saying that CIA agents can be nerds too. You were just restating what he said in a condescending way that made it appear as if you were the only one here who realized what he was saying, and we all needed to be reminded that agents are people too.
