Upcoming Firmware Will Brick Unlocked iPhones

iCry writes "It was rumored last week, and Apple has now confirmed it: 'Apple said today that a firmware update to the iPhone due to be released later this week "will likely result" in SIM-unlocked iPhones turning into very expensive bricks... So what are users of SIM-unlocked iPhones to do? Not run the latest software update, that's for sure. Users can instead pray to the hacking deities — the famed iPhone Dev Team that released the free software unlock, and iPhoneSIMfree, which released a commercial software unlock — to write applications that will undo the unlocks, as it were, if those users want to run the latest iPhone software.'"

My. Thats a brave move. First they chopped $200 off, and then threaten to turn them into paperweights if you dare to use them away from their selected few. They *really* know how to treat their early adopters well.

Quick buy shares in O2 and AT&T! Quiiick!

Apparently it's full of illiterate deaf idiots with too much money and time. It is advertised as working only with att. If you bought it expecting something different, then you're a fool and I'd like to befriend your wallet... I mean you.

Nobody's talking about utter control, and it's more than just using them in ways that Apple hadn't intended, it's using them in ways EXPLICITLY PROHIBITED BY YOUR CONTRACT. You're lucky Apple and AT&T don't sue you for specific performance plus legal fees and punitive damages. Geeks think that openness is GOD ... until you actually make them behave honestly by obeying the contract THEY SIGNED. Personally I think you should be made an example of. Your sarcastic argument proves nothing except that you're an enormous douche.

It's not Poor Apple - people are buying things from them and then using them in ways that Apple hadn't intended! That's so totally unfair to Apple I can't believe it!

It's Poor buyers - they purchased the product and used it in a way the company specifically said was unsupported and now they're whining that Apple isn't going out of its way to support them. That's so totally unfair! Wah wah wha!

They bought the phone. No one made them. They knew the unlock hacks were unsupported. Apple told them. They knew that the phone would be downloading updates.

Why is it that every techwad on /. thinks they have a "right" to have things exactly the way they want? Here's a note to all the basement-dwelling twelve-year-olds out there: life doesn't owe you anything. Nor do corporations. Get over yourselves.
