MySpace Makes Plans for Online Gaming Channel

News Corp's MySpace has announced a partnership with Oberon Media to bring casual games to their social network. MySpace Games will allow users to include diversions right on their web spaces. "MySpace is looking to tap into the fast-growing market for "casual gaming" -- five-minute distractions that appeal to audiences of all ages by letting them test their wits against other online players. MySpace Games is expected to launch in 2008, the companies said." Though almost certainly not as in-depth, this sounds like it has overtones of Metaplace.

I'm honestly astonished this didn't happen sooner. Casual game apps as an option for email accounts would be a huge draw to the much-vaunted 12-20 yo demographic.

I still don't quite feel the draw to integrate games on a personal page. To me, it's just as easy to open up a new tab (or window, for those who dislike tabbed browsing) and start playing. Same thing happened to Facebook. I don't know...I'm just not feeling it.

But thinking about it from the perspective of the days of Geocities when I was just beginning to really use the web, I can understand why those less involved with the internet would like this.

Been doing this for a while on my page. It's cheesy, but fun. I can tell you now, people aren't going to be playing them as much as you think. If you can't convince your own friends to play, who else will. It's an ok idea, but it's not going to turn out the way they think it will.
