Leopard Early Adopters Suffer For The Rest of Us
News.com tallies up the minor annoyances early adopters have experienced dealing with the newest version of OS X. From a change in folder design to install issues, and beyond to lack of support for Java 6, Mac users have had more to grumble about than usual in the last week. Just the same, the article notes, there have been no major problems and (compared to other OS launches) Leopard kicked off fairly well. "Let's give thanks to the early adopters, however masochistic they may be. You can do all the QA in the world before releasing an operating system, and it's not going to compare to what happens when the unwashed masses get their hands on the product. Microsoft's Windows Vista had years of developer releases, and was released to manufacturing several weeks before it went on sale to the general public. Still, compatibility problems cropped up because it's extremely difficult to anticipate what people are running, and in what combination. It's easier for Apple because it tightly controls its hardware and software, and because there are fewer potential combinations in the wild, but it's still a Herculean task."
fellacious (GNAP) Intercourse, PA - Windows Vista appears to finally be taking off, at least within one Fortune 100 company. The GNAA had for the past 13 years been using Red Hat Linux and it's successor, Fedora Core, but growing discontent with the free software operating system forced CTO Jmax to declare on Wednesday that the company was to be switching its entire infrastructure to the new version of Windows, effective immediately. "I'm not going to theatrically claim that I wasn't expecting to have to do this," Jmax said. "This has been coming for quite some time." The GNAA's troubles with Red Hat's Linux system included chronic governance problems, a persistent failure to maintain key repositories, a complex and undocumented submission process which has kept the GNAA's free trolling utilities off the Red Hat-based desktops of thousands of would-be trolls, inability to keep RPM up to date, and a failure to address the problem of Firefox not crashing a entire computer when the user loads Last Measure. "The deal-breaker, though, was when a key Last Measure server remained down for four hours while our entire Intercourse development team tried desperately to bring it up despite not having statically-linked package manager binaries." What had happened was Dikky, visiting from Norway, wanted to play the child pornography mod of Doom 3 on that server- which had to drag several libraries with it. "In addition," said Jmax, "several key software applications used in the GNAA's corporate workflow are proprietary software- which means that they had to be run in an Ubuntu compatibility environment anyway." However, being as those unnamed applications were written in C#.NET, "We expect that our transition to Windows Vista will come off without a hitch."

It is currently under investigation from the SEC for misuse of invested funds, and being sued by the GNAA for breach of contract for sucking more than specified in the GNAA's contract with Red Hat.

The Java complainers on OSX should STFU. Sun's released the JDK source, Redhat is putting it in Fedora 8. The Java complainers can make their own JDK for OSX. But then they wouldn't be able to whine at Apple any more.
Oh yes, poor poor company, working so hard to earn as much money as they can, they should be praised for their herculean efforts to make products that they will sell later on...
Eric: "What're quantum mechanics?"
Rincewind: "I don't know. People who repair quantums, I suppose."
Mac users are 'unwashed masses'.
Sounds like the exact same problems cropping up for OSX that popped up for Vista. Who would've thought a large company with a closed-source operating system would have problems on the release date?? Meh...
Non-free software will always depend on free software? Explain DOS, Mac OS Classic, OS/2, Netware, etc. (Actually Netware probably does depend on some free software.)
Without GCC, X, and a host of other free tools, there would be no OSX. There's not much software that does not have free software roots and all software has free software alternatives that are just as old and often more reliable. Even MSDOS can be traced back to QDOS and CP/M and the concepts used by both were common and shared with Unix, which started it's life free and was followed quickly by BSD and GNU/Linux. Ideas, are not things that can be owned and they grow best in freedom.
DMCA, Hollings, Palladium. What might have sounded like paranoia is now common sense.
