New Project To End Stupidity Online
mrneutron2003 writes to tell us that StupidFilter, a new Open Source project started by Gabriel Ortiz and Paul Starr, plans to provide an intellectual prophylactic for memetically transmitted diseases. "Too long have we suffered in silence under the tyranny of idiocy. In the beginning, the internet was a place where one could communicate intelligently with similarly erudite people. Then, Eternal September hit and we were lost in the noise. The advent of user-driven web content has compounded the matter yet further, straining our tolerance to the breaking point. It's time to fight back."
This is a crazy idea. You create mental categories where you put people in, and then you act blindly on them. First you call someone stupid for something he says. Then when he objects that he's not stupid and the rest of his life shows no stupidity, you assume it's lies. Then you ignore him forever.
Eugenics is filtering out the stupid too. I bet within five years of this StupidFilter being out there, there will be eugenics programs across America. It's a small step from banning their internet posts, to making them wear yellow stars, to shooting them and leaving their bodies in ditches.
This "stupid filter" is a Bad Idea(tm) if you want to keep your freedom.
