Mario Christmas Mural Video

Daniel LeBlanc writes "Just in time for the Christmas Season, I drew an NES 8-Bit styled mural on the side of my high school. The mural consists of Yoshi pulling a sled with a Santa Mario and an Elf Toad." Here are both the video of the mural coming together a full photo gallery of the mural.

    Not just any graffiti, 8-bit graffiti. Oh stop being such a grinch, it was a cool project.

      The term graffiti has very negative connotations, because most people think this means that no permission was given for the project. The website says permission was given, and in fact this mural was done by a legitimate school club. As for your assertion that the project is lame, well it is a mural of very popular video game characters, isn't it? I think that satisfies the nerd requirement here. So what is the problem here? Are you simply against a few high schoolers having a little fun?

      Seriously-- I can't help but think that the people who tag this as "wasteoftime" are the same people who sit in their basements consuming instead of creating, who convince themselves that any activity beyond console games and doritos are a waste of time. Sigh.

      People who say it was lame are clueless. It was a perfect medium - the ragged edges of bricks lent themselves perfectly to the representation of an 8-bit, low-res video image. It was creative, and it was definitely a part of our geek heritage. So if you want to complain about it, feel free to STUFF IT!

    why those colors?? i mean i didn't read to find out why but they could of done different colors just so it was less strain on the eyes and could be seen better from a distance.... at first i was like wtf is that pastel blob..

      wait a minute so your telling me This (NES screenshot) is the same colors as Grafitti

    Besides the cool art, I think its very cool that they can do this and not get suspended, washable chalk or not. It takes a certain kind of advanced learning on the administration's part, that you might not expect from a TX high school, or anywhere else for that matter.

      It is indeed impressive that the administration agreed to allow this.

      Our annual end-of-year fun project in high school was painting the freshman English teacher's truck.

      Yes, it was with his permission. He was a decent guy with an interesting sense of humor. I did a double take on the first day of classes when he got in the room without walking past me as I was sitting next to the door. He used the window to come in the room in the morning.

      I think the most impressive one we did was zebra stripes and a tail one year.

      twice - once in high school and once in college :P

      He was a favorite teacher of the students at my high school even long after we were out of his class. The painting of the truck was done by students in all the grades, not just the freshman class.

      Agreed. It seems like all we hear about in high schools are information and fun lockdowns. Now all the poor kid needs is for nintendo to file suit, since the usual first line of fun-stopping gave him the okay...

      This was in TX? (I obviously didn't read TFA) Whoa, I'm amazed they permitted this sort of thing to happen in TX (I'm from Austin). Usually this sort of thing would get you a good old fashioned caning.

    The page with the video linked to the OneUps' MySpace page for the music. The download link there doesn't work, but if you'd like a decent quality MP3 of it, it was posted on OCRemix.org some time ago.

    This is the type of thing I like to see young people doing for fun.

    I'd love to replace all the obscene graffiti painted or carved around the University campus with lighthearted cultural references drawn in chalk.

    It may not be the most productive thing for them to do, but it has more benefits than a lot of things people waste time on (eg, porn, WoW). A group of friends enjoyed making it, and plenty of people will probably enjoy looking at it.

    Next time you're in a public restroom and there's a crudely drawn penis on the wall, erase it and draw a Mudkip. The world will be a (slightly) better place.

    Well, being completely picky in the /. fashion I feel I must mention that Yoshi was first introduced in the SNES, which was a 16-bit system. Am I correct on this?

    So technically, you've got 8-bit characters and 16-bit characters. Still cool though.

      I'll give you Yoshi being introduced in the 16 bit world, but he still made an 8bit appearance with Yoshi's Cookie on the original NES during the time when Nintendo was still making games for the NES but switching their focus to the SNES. so, 8-bit is still accurate but slightly misleading.

      True, but he later appeared on the NES in Yoshi, so he's still a valid 8-bit character.

      There was a game called "Yoshi" for the NES and Gameboy as well. Another 8-bit appearance.

    Yet MORE pixelated childhood memories. Can we please move beyond this now? Speaking as a fully qualified of the x-gen (or whatever), I think that this fascination with 8-bit graphics of videogames of our youth has gotten stale and is no longer interesting or amusing.

    Think of something else.

      Your argument would make sense if a 30 year old made this mural, but that is not the case. The people who did this are current high schoolers, and they did it for their own amusement, not for us old timers.

      I say enjoy it while it lasts, however long that may be. Can you just imagine some time in the future when these types of kids start making nostalgic murals of power rangers or pokemon or 64 bit mario?

    huh? It's freaking chalk, get a clue.
    Not only that, but considering they had permission, that removes it from the graffiti category and pushes it into the alternative art category. Then there's the fact that they had some pics showing them cleaning it up afterwards. Oh wait, that would require actually RTFA....nevermind I forgot where I was....again.

    I thought 'pastel blob' when I first saw it, too - it's hard to tell what it is at certain distances. Perhaps next go-round, they can solve that problem by using the color of the brick itself as the 'dark' pixels, instead of chalk purple.     I am not that creative, so just in case I use a solution that definitely uses 8 bits as well (actually a few more). There is this place called Internet where digital images are available all over the place, such as JO All one has to do is slam it in YottaPrint and print it on wall-mural, or billboard size...

    You and the AC mentioned Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie...I was about to point out he was in "Mario is Missing"...which shows my lameness, as that wasn't even a real game. It took me 2 hours to beat on my very first time playing.
