Is Apple Killing Linux on the Desktop?

Domains May Disappear writes "Chris Howard has an interesting commentary at Apple Matters on recent trends in OS market share that says that while OS X has seen continual growth, from 4.21% in Jan 2006 to 7.31% in December 2007 at the same time, Linux's percentage has risen from only 0.29% to 0.63%. The reasons? 'Apple has Microsoft Office, Linux doesn't; Apple has Adobe Creative Suite, Linux doesn't; Apple has easily accessed and easy to use service and support, Linux doesn't; Apple is driven by someone who has some understanding of end-user needs, Linux is not,' says Howard. 'Early in the decade it seemed that if you wanted a Windows alternative, Linux was it. Nowadays, an Apple Mac is undoubtedly the alternative and, with its resurgence and its Intel base, a very viable one.'"

That's fucking stupid. You don't need a complexly designed, failure-prone program like apt just to install programs in Mac OS X, and furthermore you don't need the crappy Linux programs it installs either.

I do not use Mac, and will not. I don't like how it looks, I don't like how it feels, and I don't like the company that does it.

I use Windows, but dislike it strongly and wish I didn't. I don't need to explain this one.

I use Linux whenever I can, and enjoy it.

Your reply assumes that everyone has the money. This is not always the case outside the country you live in.

My advice to you would be to get the hell out of the Philipines and go somewhere where you can earn a decent living. You seem to be intelligent enough to get a decent job elsewhere, how about giving that a try before you bellyache about how poor you are?

Linux continues the Unix tradition of disarray and persnicketiness that just does not appeal to normal people. I'm glad to have an interface tyrant, even when I disagree with his decisions, because I've lived in the alternate universe of complete lack of restriction (and direction).

I am fixing to build my own xMac over the next few weeks, since Apple continues to refuse to do it themselves. I'll even buy a 'family' edition of Leopard so I can put a sticker on the case and have a technically "Apple-labeled" computer. I'm just looking for the most compatible and least hacky hardware combination for the task before I go on teh newegg spr33.

I'm sure I'm burning up my karma like paper in a fireplace, but I don't give a shit. I'm sick of mods abusing their power and marking things that they don't agree with as 'troll', etc.! That's why I browse at -1, and I've decided to stop moderating too, because Slashdot moderation should be dropped like a hot potato.

Sorry, this is incorrect. I've got Ubuntu Feisty Fawn in a partition on my machine. Since I don't know much about Linux, I signed up for a free online course from HP. The course uses Fedora ?. I've had no trouble mapping the information presented in the course to Unbuntu. The biggest difference I've seen so far has been the fact that Ubuntu doesn't use a root account in the traditional sense.
    [/quote]

So admit you don't know much but the online course you took from HP allowed you to map some things and for that you feel entitled to tell me I'm wrong.
So lets turn it around. You are dead wrong. In your basic course you probably covered things such as chmod, maybe chown, ls, ps, vi. Granted, those
are essentially the same on all unix and unix like operating systems. My statement was referring to many of the other aspects of the OS
such as how daemons are started, where are the xinetd configuration files. Are we using modprobe.conf or some other wacky file name
how are the apache files laid out, just a few "fedora" or are they broken up into a shitload of little peices "Novell".
Where are the network configuration files? /etc/sysconfig? /etc/networks? /etc/rc/somewhere.
Even the pitiful LSB failed miserably which was a pathetic attempt to somewhat standardize things but many
Linux distros don't even install it by default.
Then for your GUI environments, although there are many there are two primary and each distro has their favorite
and the other they don't even bother with. Novel uses KDE, Fedora - Gnome, and Ubuntu whatever they use (Gnome if
memory serves). So if you prefer gnome then you have to pick your distro carefully or you end up with an unusable
desktop that is missing half the crap it needs to be functional.

As a Mac user, thank you for not staying. You pretty obviously bought your Macbook just *dying* to hate it, spent some token amount of time playing just so nobody could say you didn't, then returned the thing probably in a huff and probably while loudly proclaiming that Linux is better. If I were *any* more cynical, I'd suggest that the whole exercise was all just one big telegraphed, purely political lead-up to your return "in disgust."

Guys like you are a total cancer with your big, showy "open mind" that is actually not open at all. If you'd liked your Mac (ha ha! No, seriously) enough to keep it, you'd almost certainly be one of those meatheads who make us all look bad by degrading anyone who doesn't agree. Oh, call it a hunch. As far as I'm concerned, Mac is a little bit better because you don't like it. Have a great day!

You can also do this with OSX. There is a program that is there just for the small minority who loves to type arcane keystroke sequences. It's called terminal. The rest of the world likes to use a mouse.
