Bjork! Bjork! Bjork!
even worse, experts who are so ingrained in their expertise that they are unwilling to learn anything new.
for example, doctors who spout "calorie in / calorie out" when it comes to fat gain and loss.
in order to disprove this over simplified error, i had the following discussion with a retired internal medicine doctor:
dr: "losing fat is as simple as burning fewer calories than you take in, it is simply calorie in vs calorie out."
me: "i don't believe that to be true. for example, take two identical twins, put them on the exact same diet and exercise program. now give one anabolic steroids. would you expect both of these twins to have the same body fat percentage after 6 months."
dr: after a brief pause, "uh, no."
me: "then it must be more complicated than calorie in and calorie out because they both took in the same calories, they both expended the same effort to burn calories, yet they ended up with different body compositions."
of course, he was done talking baout diet after i disproved his "expert" opinion that one's hormonal system is too important and its effects too significant to ignore when discussing diet.
the TRUTH is, regardless of what you've been told, is that your hormonal system is incredibly important in determining whether your body gains muscle, loses fat, your satiety, your energy level and, ta da, your over all health.
anyone interested in finding a hormonally balanced diet can visit drsears.com (check out the testimonials, they are unreal). manuel uribe (as seen on the learning channel) has lost nearly 500 lbs in two years, lost his depression and lost his hunger while following the zone diet.
dara torres set the american 50m free swimming record at the astounding age of 40. she did it with the 2nd fastest time in the world this year. look for her in the 2008 olympics as she becomes the oldest person ever to make an olympic swim team. if you know swimming, you know this feat is utterly breath taking. yes, dara gives blood twice a week due to accusations she takes steroids to enhance her performance.
the italian national basketball team followed dr. sears' recommendations leading up to the 2004 olympics. even though they were predicted to finish last in the european olympic trials, they finished 3rd, they handed the americans their first olympic exhibition defeat in 20 attempts (by a whopping 17 points!) and won the silver medal while the nba all stars settled for a bronze.
i'd say manuel, dara, the italian national basketball team are glad they didn't buy into the "calorie is a calorie" grave over simplification.
in my case, i've lost ~25 lbs of fat in just over six months. i've improved from 10 lb flies with 15 reps to benching 160 lbs five times in about six months. over the last three months, i've gained nearly 10 lbs per month on my bench, but that will likely taper off as time goes on. if i can average half that throughout the year, i will be able to lift 205 lbs 8 times by next january and i will weigh less than 165 lbs (i'm 5'10.5", 160 lbs right now).
in short, at 41 + the zone diet, i'm gaining muscle and strength faster than when i was 19 and on a high carb diet, i'm losing excess fat at the rate of about 1 lb per week, i'm leaner now than when i was in high school and running cross country, my cardio capability has dramatically increased, i feel great, i eat well and life is fantastic. all this is possible because my zone diet enables me to mitigate ongoing nerve damage across my left elbow.
oh, and did i mention my life long allergy problems have disappeared since i started taking dr. sears epa/dha supplements? the same stuff used to feed mccloy (the lone surviving minor in west virginia) intravenously at the request of his neuro surgeon? you know, the same mccloy who made the *miraculous* recovery?
dr. sears is a phd and former MIT biotechnology researcher - he knows his stuff. the elitism of the experts who are unwilling to admit they are wrong is robbing people out of a quality of life that is incredible. that and the sheer laziness of people to learn and try new things.
