Where's Our Terabit Ethernet?
carusoj writes "Five years ago, we were talking about using Terabit Ethernet in 2008. Those plans have been pushed back a bit, but Ethernet inventor Bob Metcalfe this week is starting to throw around a new date for Terabit Ethernet: 2015. He's also suggesting that this be done in a non-standard way, at least at first, saying it's an opportunity to "break loose from the stranglehold of standards and move into some fun new technologies.""
God, I knew someone would try to sound intelligent by invoking Shannon's law. I mean no offense, but Shannon's "law" has been used by highly educated so-called "experts" to explain why one couldn't go faster than 2400 Baud, then 9600 Baud, then 28 Kbs, then [insert your own made-up speed here] over copper. Guess what? None of it has ever proven true.
Dude, I've been hearing this nonsense about Shannon's law for about 25 years now. There's always some new technique which is used to advance the speed across copper.
Sorry to burst your theoretical bubble, but in practice Shannon's "law" has proven to be something which sounds good, seems logical, but just complete utter BS as far as stopping people from punching through it. If there was any truth to it, then we'd be stuck back at 2400 bps modems.
So please spare me this nonsense about Shannon's law. I grew tired of hearing it over 15 years ago.
Or, to put it more simply:
Anonymous Cowards' allegory to Shannon's law: There's always a way to break Shannon's law. And there always will be.
