Ubuntu 8.04 Released
Nate2 writes "The Hardy Heron has taken flight: it's the second LTS (Long Term Support) release of the world's most popular distro. New features include the Wubi Windows installer and Firefox 3 beta 5. Grab a copy here, and check out Linux Format's overview of the release."
What's with the name? Are they trying to appeal to Mac users or something?
Uh, yeah, except that: isn't it kind of ILLEGAL to download copyrighted stuff via torrents?
Might want to watch yourself there, since the RIAA can see stuff like this...
Nice try. I'm assuming you're one of the operators from #ubuntu who is bullying anyone who has anything bad to say about how they handled the release.
:> Again, we'll see what Canonical has to say. I imagine they won't be impressed. :> :> Seveas and who else? :>
How about I post a log of a conversation I had with one of said volunteers? That'd really upset you, wouldn't it?
[Amaranth] Hello.
Before yet another one of you teamsters decides to tell me that I should have went to #ubuntu-ops first, I'll point out that the first time anyone mentioned #ubuntu-ops to me was -after- I was banned from the official channel.
[Amaranth] That wasn't my plan.
[Amaranth] Just wanted to clear a couple things up
[Amaranth] First of all, do you understand why we didn't want people to give links to the isos?
Yes, obviously. I'm an employee of a commercial customer of Canonical, I'm not just some random IRC troll that's here for Seveas and the rest of you to boss around and abuse
Banning people from posting that link, on the other hand, is an entirely different matter
[Amaranth] We aren't attacking you, I don't see why you feel the need to attack us.
Seveas has banned me from two channels, it's quite obvious I'm being attacked personally and it's being done so because I'm criticizing the volunteers. Don't patronize me.
[Amaranth] But that's a different issue. A Canonical employee even said that the release was being somewhat delayed because the servers were overloaded.
[Amaranth] And it has been standard policy as far back as I can remember that anyone linking to such things before the official release gets banned. It slows down the mirroring process, it slows down the website update, the iso could be changed last minute, etc.
[Amaranth] But my main issue is what you think the IRC Team is.
[Amaranth] We do not represent Canonical, we represent Ubuntu. Canonical has no involvement in our operation.
[Amaranth] Complaining to them just wastes time for them, they can't do anything.
We'll see what they have to say about that.
[Amaranth] They've already said as much.
[Amaranth] Canonical has no control over the community, by design.
So the volunteers did not sign the Ubuntu Code of Conduct are not part of the Community Council?
[Amaranth] We did and the Community Council is our 'boss'
[Amaranth] But Canonical does not control the Community Council either.
Very convenient for all of you, isn't it? To seemingly have such a close relation to the company and yet not have any relation to it at all.
[Amaranth] I told you, they've already said something
Did they say that your behaviour was acceptable? Because otherwise there's nothing new that you've added that should stop me from complaining
[Amaranth] They didn't say anything about it one way or the other, they don't have any control over it.
So they said something and nothing at the same time, then.
You're not making a very good case either.
[Amaranth] What I'm trying to say is that they won't do anything about it.
[Amaranth] Because they can't.
It's clear that the operators don't -intend- to make a clear case, however, just ban anyone who dissents and push them around privately once they can't talk in the channel.
[Amaranth] If you have a problem you need to bring it up with the IRC Council
And let me guess who's on the IRC council.
If a complaint is made it'll be ignored, plain and simple. I'm making a complaint to people who -will- listen.
[Amaranth] They won't
We'll see.
[Amaranth] We don't have to, it's already done.
Yes, it is, isn't it? You've gotten rid of the person who was openly critical of you and are now free to harass him in private, aren't you?
[Amaranth] I am not harassing you.
[Amaranth] I'm trying to make you understand the situation.
I am in contact with Gerry Carr at this point, the attempts by all the volunteers to try and silence me aren't going to work any longer.
Thanks for reminding us that some people are kunts.
Why the hell did my post get modded "5, Funny"? It's a valid point. Downloading copyrighted works without the author's express written consent is illegal. Period. End of story. I'm not a big fan of illegal activity. Of any kind.
... you don't have to file for copyright anymore.) And yep, downloading stuff that ain't yours, is illegal.
I checked up on this stuff, did my research and found out, yep, Ubuntu is copyrighted. (Well, in the sense that there's a copyright on it
I know you all think it's "5, Funny", to break the law, probably because you can get away with it, but I still can't figure you guys out.
No, it isn't, knuckles@dantian.org.
But please enjoy the complementary spam.

Ah, dumbass, I use it regularly.
Now go dig you little head out of your ass and when you grow up, you might find that there are people who know things you don't.
There is no "-1 offended" or "-1 you don't agree with me" mod options for a reason.
It was better than their original codename, "Fucking Nigger".
