Windows XP SP3 Creating Havoc

ozmanjusri writes "According to Information Week, within hours of its wide availability Windows XP SP3 had drawn hundreds of complaints from users who claim the update is wreaking havoc on their computers. One user said in a Microsoft newsgroup: 'I downloaded and installed [the SP3] package for IT Professionals and Developers on one of my computers. Now I can't get the computer to boot. I don't think Microsoft should have made this a critical update.' Other sites including IT Wire are also reporting problems, which include include random reboots or the inability to boot at all." Note that XP3 won't install on systems running beta IE8; and after a successful SP3 install users will no longer be able to downgrade from IE7 to IE6.

GO BUY VISTA RIGHT NOW OR WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL!" Funny thing is...using Vista is quite possibly worse than SP3. Also, does this seem like deja-vu for that Vista update that came out a while back that was killing machines? Who exactly did they fire (or hire) over at Microsoft that has been pumping out these terrible updates? (I mean, worse than usual)

Hundreds of complaints with a user base in the millions. Sounds like Microsoft did a great job. If only Linux distros could work that well.

Guys I don't know how you can sit around and talk so casually about Windows XP when the Slashdot community is being rocked by the revelation that John Romero's career has fallen to the point where he's now working as a Tina Fey impersonator to support his extravagent haircare needs. The resemblance is striking. It's rumored that he offers "full service" (wink wink)if you slip him a bottle of Herbal Essence.

I've used M$ software from DOS 3.2 and know for a fact that each version has offered less user control and vendor competition with few actual feature or performance gains. Free software surpassed non free in performance and features over the last five years, so M$'s continued moves toward DRM are suicidal. At home, I've been M$ free for eight years. At work, I've had to put up with NT, W2K and occasionally XP and can say without doubt that W2K was better than the others but it still suffers from the whole M$ experience - lack of user control, obnoxious interruptions, network p0wnage and the fruitless attempts to prevent the all of the above.

Yes, I hate M$. It's not because of their technical failure, it's because they have forced their non free crap on vendors who would have otherwise offered their customers choices. M$ can not collapse soon enough, so their sabotage of XP is good news.

Don't forget other costs of non free software, like advertising, anti-competitive practices, the obscene wealth piled up by company CEO's and many other things that have nothing to do with developer time. As Microsoft is one of the prime proponents of H1-B imports and mostly buys "mature" code for a dime on the dollar of actual cost, you might reconsider your advocacy of that company as a friend of developers.

Finally, there is no good reason to buy second rate, non free code when there's plenty of good free code available. At this point, only the most legacy bound organizations, irrational fanboys and the hapless victims of Microsoft's anti-competitive practices use Windows. People who escape are happier than you think they are - the way you interpret responses as angry reflects your own state of mind more than it does that of others.

I guess you are forgetting the really annoying "this application has stopped responding" text box, or the "not responding" bar. These are a gigantic step backwards over win2k as a program could just be busy doing something but XP tells the user that it has crashed. You XP apologists are all the same, "bbbut it has wireless NETWORKING!". Please. Win2k is solid as a rock. XP isnt. But lets drill down into your argument.

in a word? Multimedia. In more words? Security, GPO, native hardware support, support for newer versions of IE, Remote Desktop, etc. If you really don't see the myriad of ways XP improves on 2000 I'm not going to try and list them all. Besides, Wikpedia already has (more or less).
Do you know what all that spells? BLOAT. Security? what the crappy windows firewall? Thats just an illusion of security for people who dont have proper BSD hardware firewalls. GPO's can be deployed to windows 2000 clients so im not sure what your trying to say with that. Native hardware support? lol... what, a year more updated default drivers than 2k... Support for newer versions of IE? LOLOLOLOLOLOL ie, thats rich! IE being a feature, dont make me laugh.
Sure a remote desktop server might be nice, but you got VNC which is much more trustworthy than any remote M$ protocol. RDP clients as im sure you know are readily available for win2k.
And you biggest word, multimedia? I hope your not suggesting that WMP 1) should be run at all, period. (MPC ftw) 2) that that justifies sacrificing rock hard stability for.

The problem with people like you is that you have a useless upgrade mentality. lusers such as yourself are the reason vista will take over. Well, its ALMOST as good as xp, might as well upgrade! Its the same thing I saw 5+ years ago when XP came dragging its bloated ass across the floor.

WIN2K for life! All you need is win2k. Anyone who says different is a M$ fanboi.
