Moving Toward a Single Linux UI?

Anonymous writes "With the releases of Fedora 9, Hardy Heron and OpenSuSE 11 so close together, it's looking more than ever like an evolution to a common interface for major Linux distributions. Here's a compilation of screen shots and descriptions that make it appear to be the case. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing?" There are plenty of other options out there, of course, even considering only Linux distros that are based on Gnome and KDE, and plenty of wilder (or at least less common) desktops to choose from besides.

This is why there will NEVER be a year of the linux desktop. You can never settle on an UI. There must be a dozen or better desktops for linux and none of the look or act the same. It's way too confusing for the normal users. Get a clue and standardize.

At least Microsoft figured out a long time ago (Windows 95) what users really wanted and gave it to them. There has been a pretty standard UI since then with only minor changes. With conistancy like that OSS guys don't stand a chance of ever having a comparable desktop.

Then to top it all off Microsoft released Vista, and the Windows UI never looked better or performed better. On a modern system the Vista UI can't be beat by anything a linux box or Mac can do.

You can cry and complain that Vista doesn't work on your antiquated systems, go buy a real system and quit digging in your neighbors trash for you system upgrades. Even better go buy a real computer from a major vendor and they'll even throw Vista on it for free.

but the password hash is set to a single bang (!), which is impossible to match. Apparently, a Debian developer commented this ComputeHash(password) useless command two years ago. With Debian/Ubuntu, just typing "!" as root password will do! :)
