Sony Integrates YouTube API for PS3

Sony has announced the inclusion of the YouTube API to allow game developers to offer video uploading as an integrated part of their games. The only game that seems to be taking advantage of this so far is Mainichi Issho, a free Japanese PSN game.

    Hopefully Microsoft will follow suit with the 360. Too often have I been playing a game of Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, or Gears and you get that "WTF" moment that you wished you could have shared. I realize capture cards and the necessary cables aren't that expensive anymore, but it really is a pain. EA's Skate. had an option for this to, IIRC. But it was on EA's website, not YouTube.

      Of course, this might also lead to even greater levels of worthless game footage uploaded to youtube. At least there was a slight technical knowledge required to capture the video, then encode and upload. Now literally anyone can do it.

      Anyways, its still a nifty thing I guess. Go Sony.

      I would've preferred Skate have integrated with YouTube than EAs seemingly shoddily put together site. I didn't try it past launch but it was really slow, and incredibly buggy at the time.

      This would be good only if it ALWAYS recorded your game. Say it'll keep the last thirty seconds or something around that.
      Most of the time when you have a "WTF" moment it passes before you would get to the recording option.
      By having a backbuffer you could start recording even after that corpse flew out of the window and hit someone, and still capture that funny moment.

      I don't think this elitism is really warranted. The fact that somebody has the equipment and knowledge to capture console gameplay videos doesn't mean their videos will be any good. Conversely, someone who can make killer demo videos doesn't really need to know jack about setting up capture equipment or video compression techniques.

      Then I wish more games were like Halo 3. It automatically records all of your multiplayer sessions to a temporary library (Holds last ~20 sessions, I think.) and then you can flip over to Theater mode to pick and choose what you want to save. From there you can put them on your File Share and store them on your HD. Then you can recommend clips to your friends over Xbox Live and Bungie.net, etc.

      I'm not saying all games should have modes as extensive as this, but auto-saving all of your temporary films would be great.

      Halo 3 already has that. Granted, it's not Youtube, but you can definitely capture WTF moments. I wish that was something that was integrated into all games.

      Hopefully Microsoft will follow suit with the 360. Of course with Microsoft IM Blocking YouTube Links you shouldn't hold your breath on doing this for the Xbox.

      What you said doesn't disprove the fact that, in all proportions, there is a higher probability to have worthless video uploaded if you empower the computer illiterate. Making a generalization doesn't mean saying that one fucking hundred percent is like the generalization. That one guy who's good for nothing when it comes to computers can make good videos doesn't disprove that most of them wouldn't do any good. And that computer literate guys can make worthless videos (of course they do, there are already too many of them on youtube..) doesn't detract from the fact that on average, it will be of higher quality than the things made by the illiterate.

      Now, here's the deal :
      Is it worth it, on average, to get more worthless video, all proportions considered, by empowering the beginner, if it means getting some of them to produce good things ? or is the price of losing some gems seem more attractive if it means not having all the 13 years old console tards share their videos on the tubes ?

      Erm, that was pretty much corrected the same day it was reported on. Clearly it was an error by some programmer somewhere that has been fixed, but of course, you can continue trolling.

      Or like Starcraft, which had this maybe ten years before Halo 3. Of course, that game's so old that they decided to save your hard disk space by just recording every action taken and running it through the engine again when you replay a game, so sometimes there are bugs.

      That's more or less what Halo 3 does, it's not actually a video per se`, but when you save a video clip and re-watch it, you're actually "playing" the game again. It's not an actual video.

      Got it. Unfortunately, while you can get 3rd-party tools to watch Starcraft replays made with different engines (old patches, and such) I'm guessing it's rather harder to do that for Halo 3. On the bright side, that lets you change perspective and such without saving a multi-gigabyte file for a ten-minute game.

      It's bullshit, yes, but I feel like tossing it in. ;)

    This fits in with the much broader Sony user generated content plans:

    * User created levels for games Little Big Planet. Early versions of games ship with the game developer's own levels and then users create and upload their own levels that are made available to other PS3 owners with ratings and download counts to tell which are the best levels. Later on game developers come out with updated BluRay versions of their game with the disc filled with all the most popular levels.

    * Ingame screenshots and movies. Saved to your PS3's harddrive and then published either through Home or websites like youtube or the upcomming PS3 gamer personal webpages. For Home the movies and images captured will be able to be streamed right on the wall of each person's own personal space along with other media content they have on their harddrives

      To each his own. I love em.

      I cant count the number of controllers Ive worn out, well I probably can, somewhere close to a dozen dualshocks and dualshock 2's. Haven't used the new one yet, but its essentially identical from what I hear.

      The Xbox controllers are too narrow, my fingers end up mingling underneath wondering what to do with themselves. And the knobby, bulbous buttons are irritating. As for Nintendo.. well lets just say the wiimote isn't going to get me a shorter lap time in Gran Turismo...

      I find the Wiimote tons more comfortable than the SIXAXIS. The SIXAXIS gave my fingers cramps.

      At least when you use the Wiimote + nunchuck, you don't have to hold both hands together in front of you. THAT is innovation. Kudos to Nintendo for getting that aspect right. I think they should come out with PS3 and 360 controllers that are separated for each hand and joined with a cord.

      To compare, play GTA4 on the PS3 and then Mario Kart on the Wii (with nunchuck). Basically, the same type of controls, but one forces you to ruin your hands and sit up intensely.

      I'm not really a fan of the nunchuck. I find the button layout really annoying. The wiimote is way too small for my hands too. Also, the weird paradigm where you move the hand on the screen by moving the Wiimote just felt awkward to me. I guess I'm just used to the old fashioned controller. Hell, I've been using one since the original NES came out so that's what, 20 years?

      Agree. I really like the Playstation controller. The only time I've ever had my hands cramp was when I was in some intense Dynasty Warrior battles and I realized I was actually squeezing so hard on the controller that it was cracking. I don't have small hands (being 6'2") and everyone tells me that the 360 controller is better for bigger hands, but I just don't feel it. Besides, it's too heavy to hold for hours of gaming. I have a PS3 and love how light the new controllers are. It's a minor difference (probably mainly due to the lack of the wire) as the battery seems to offset the weight of the lack of motors, but it is slightly lighter than the PS2 DualShock.

      Having a hard connection between the buttons and sticks is also a good thing. I think I'd have more cramps if the controller were split and my hand would be going through a sequence of squeezes using more muscles to hold it and depress buttons or move the sticks. Motion Controls are just not "there" yet for either the Wii or PS3 to replace the stick.

      Yes, I'm sure that's exactly how the sequence of events unfolded. The choice was "youtube integration" or "removal of actual hardware in the console".

      It was only partially software. The 80GB still used PS2 hardware.

    They DO realize that they're just now adding a feature to their console that's been on their mobile platform (admittedly through a hack) for years?
