Scientists Get $2m to See if Robot Can Stir Soup

A British lab has won a $2m grant to study whether or not a robot could be safely employed in a kitchen to stir soup. A lab spokeswoman said, "It will specifically look at the problems of a human and a robot working together in the same space, for example in a kitchen where the service robot is performing a task such as stirring soup, while you add cream." If there had only been an industrial revolution during the 1800s where people started working closely with machines we might have already had an answer to this daunting question.

    I'm sure a stationary robot could stir my soup.

      I don't think the stationary robot is going to be the issue.

      The issue is likely to be the undertrained, underpaid buffoons arround it who either knock it over or somehow get tangled up in it, or somehow get their arm between the rotating spoon and a hard object resulting in broken bones.

      An alarming number of "qualified managers" get their neck ties sucked into metal lathes every year. How hard is it to stand near something & not get tangled up? For some people - impossible!

      My kitchen mixer has never needed to interpret my hand gestures nor register the pain on my face to be able to mix soup or anything else. If I'm still involved in the soup-making process, why do I need a robot?
