Metal Gear Solid 4 Review

mikesd81 brings us a detailed IGN review of the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4, which notes: "Fans familiar with previous Metal Gear Solid games are aware that each title has introduced new gameplay mechanics for Snake to take advantage of. The incredible part about Metal Gear Solid 4 is there are tons of additional features added to this title, and even when you run into a system or mechanic that you wouldn't think would fit in the Metal Gear Universe, Kojima and his team have figured out a way to make it blend seamlessly with the gameplay, which easily allays any fears or concerns you have.""

Too bad it's on the PS3. Remember the rootkit...

The first thing I noticed when I got a PS3 was that it's heavy as all fuck. This thing could break your foot if it fell on it. (But, being a Sony product, is still has the feeling that a light breeze could destroy it. It's an impressive feat of engineering to create such a heavy console that still feels like cheap plastic.)

So I figured I'd charge the wireless controller before using the console since the charging cable is so short and didn't reach to my couch. Guess what? The wireless controllers won't charge unless the console is actually on. So I ran through the setup with the four-foot tether to the console and then left it running to charge the controller.

On the upside, I've since discovered that you can in fact charge the controllers off any USB device, so I suppose I can just charge the controller off my laptop - which is still just a hair inconvenient.

But how's the game? I wouldn't know. As far as I got in the game was discovering you need to install the game onto the console and then just giving up. Maybe I'll get around to it sometime. (Game's only been out two days.) More likely, I'll just sell the dumbass console to someone who wants to put up with Sony shit.

Yeah, sure, this is a troll. Here, I'll sum it up without any supporting facts:

If you're considering getting a PS3 just for this game, DO NOT DO IT. The PS3 is a piece of shit. You WILL regret wasting $500 on the lead block.

No matter how enjoyable the game is, you still have to suffer through all of Sony's shit to get to play it. IT IS NOT WORTH IT.

But explaining why is "trolling" so I'll just leave it at that.

And this is why I've never understood the appeal of the MGS games. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a movie, and I'd probably not choose one that's extremely poorly-acted with an unremarkable plot and weak characterisation (yeah, sure, it's moderately interesting by the standards of computer games, but really, so what?). I don't want it from a computer game. I don't mind the odd cut scene, but those guys just don't know where to stop. And it's not like the gameplay's engaging enough to make up for the endless sitting around twiddling your thumbs, either.

Kinda reminds me of Dragon's Lair - play for a few seconds to unlock a couple of minutes of animation, sit back and watch. The difference is that in 1983 or whatever it was, this was an impressive trick to pull off. Now it's just a really boring way to spend an evening.

No doubt this'll get marked troll. It ain't. I just don't get the fuss over these games. Sorry.

IGN reviews are moot to me now. Everyone knows they take payoffs for good scores. I think the first 5 hours should be offically classified as a movie.
