Comparing Firefox 3 With Opera 9.5 On Linux

Joe Barr writes "Mayank Sharma has two recent stories on Linux.com; one evaluating the performance of Firefox 3, and the second comparing it to Opera 9.5. Which is better? For most people, it's probably more a matter of familiarity or personal preference, but these stories provide hard performance data to consider as well. Sharma notes, 'In terms of rendering JavaScript, Firefox 3 had the edge over Opera 9.5 in the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark, which has an error range between +/-0.8% to +/-11.3% depending on the type of test. In the JavScript Engine speed test, Opera 9.5 scores over its peers when it comes to error handling, DOM, and AJAX.'" Slashdot shares a corporate overlord with Linux.com.

Note that the underlying autocomplete algorithm is the Firefox 3 algorithm, not the Firefox 2 algorithm. oldbar only affects the presentation of the results.

you still get the unwanted FF3 results, and LOTS of them. Nice try at a burn, though, LOL.

    IT IS FREE!!1
and WTF is with "if it was open source", how does this make any difference unless you are a hardcode programmer and are dieing to contribute to the codebase? I for one can rarely find time to contribute to open source projects because it takes hell lot of time to understand the codebase. So I do not care if it is open source or not, and so do 90% of the population.

As long as it is free, I will rate all s/w equally, be it open source or closed!

this behavior can be mirror even more closely with a configuration option. It's not in the GUI; bitch about that

Blah blah blah cram it. My history is (or should be!) deleted at the end of every FF session. Best fix out there. If I want something saved, it is bookmarked - otherwise it should be forgotten. As for your BS, once you mention "configuration option" you're in the realm of things *I* can fix but I can *NOT* recommend. Everyone around me calls FF "Mozilla" because that is what the default icon says - yuck. If it has to be fixed by "about:config" don't expect me to fix it for anyone but myself.

i thought i'd reply to you, since you were the biggest asshole with your response.

since you use gmail so much, you should know that it's most recent versions have a 'standard' view that displays your chat and all kinds of widgets, and the "html" view.

when i would log in, i would get the status bar "loading gmail"...it would stop about 75% of the way through, then after awhile an error message would occur saying something to the effect of "there was an error loading gmail...load the 'html' basic view, or go to the 'help' page"

at the help page, it tells you basically it is either alot of web traffic or your cookies and cache that are causing gmail not to load in 'standard' mode. its solution is to use the 'html' version or "go to tools>options>clear private data>" including cache and cookies...i tried just manually deleting my cache and only google's cookies but it didn't work

yes, many, many people have this problem but the only fix offered is 'clear private data' fix offered up by gmail's help page.

So, you still want to be an asshole? is that enough fscking information for you, you fscking know-it-all douchebag? fsck! I didn't even ask for "help" in my original post, i just asked if Opera loaded Gmail better...

For someone who likes to come off like you know so much more than me about the internet, you should at least be aware that gmail had these loading problems on FF 2+...I hate how people like you power trip

Fuck you, buddy. My post was intended to be helpful. I was never an asshole at all. You're just projecting your own values onto my post, because you're frustrated. Being on Slashdot I (incorrectly) assumed you wanted more ideas to help troubleshoot the problem. I let you know that it's been working fine for me in firefox. That should be a pretty clear indicator it's on your end. Yes, many people may have this problem, and as I said in my post, my own mother has it when she uses GMail. But no, instead of thanking someone who offers help (and let me tell you this, since you insist on it - it loads IDENTICALLY WELL in Opera and Firefox - in other words, it loads just fine) you decide to go on a hissy-fit because you THOUGHT I was being an asshole. Grow up, take a deep breath, and try to imagine that people just might be trying to genuinely help you instead of going "HA HA, GMAIL SUCKS FOR YOU. GET A NEW COMPUTER, FAGGOT". Seriously. If you don't like people with this supposed "know-it-all attitude" (read: projection), you'd better get the hell off of Slashdot.
