Book Recommendations For Maths To Astrophysics?
sexy_flying_yoda writes "I have just graduated from 3 years doing a BSc in Mathematics in the UK and will be beginning an MSc in Astrophysics and Astronomy in September. I have very limited knowledge in physics, and as my new course of study is basically physics, I'm currently searching for books that will enable me to get up to speed. What books would you recommend that would help a mathematics graduate convert to a physicist?"
More like a reality complex about the state of American education and popular interests.

Well, at least that site has a picture of a woman on it.
The real Slashdot doesn't even have nerd stuff on it, nor anything that matters: It caters, by and large, to the wannabes/Entitled Generation by carrying articles about the RIAA (mostly posted by NewYork"Country"Lawyer, who should be getting a kickback from the ad revenue he's helping to generate) that send the kiddiez into posting frenzies that help to generate much-needed revenue.
Then there's the Apple articles, where all the the Steve Jobs' fanbois come out to play.
Oh, and the occassional real nerd article tends towards the fluffier side, and even then, most of the wannabes can't handle it: They go for "teh funnay", because they have an overwhelming need to post *something* - being cynical, I suspect that if they stopped typing, their brains would start functioning.
And here's something you can do for yourself, for grins: Go back a few weeks, and peruse the posts - note the first one that is off-topic, and note the UID.
Gather stats, and here's what you will discover: The higher the UID, the less likely it is that any post from it is on-topic.
Now, you might say "Well, that's to be expected - after all, the majority of posts here are by such people" - except, this holds true, no matter HOW far you go back.
In addition, the same analysis is true for things such as spelling, grammar and general coherence of posts.
You don't have to believe me: Go look for yourselves - the data is there.
