I thought Microsoft's Silverlight platform would never catch on fast. I guess I was wrong. That site prompted me to download Silverlight.
I declined, naturally. But I know I will not be able to stop its march. What's wrong with Adobe's Flash system? Why didn't they use that instead?
-it's Obama who thinks there are 57 or 58 states
Citation needed. And let me guess, you heard the one about him being a closet Muslim, too. Note to dittohead: chain e-mails are not a valid source of news.
-it's Obama who is afraid to debate McCain at 10 town-hall style meetings, after saying he would debate him anywhere and anytime.
No "afraid" was involved on either side. The Obama camp also had debate format suggestions that McCain's campaign rejected. Not that we should criticize McCain for that: it's normal. It happens because we allow the candidates to call the shots rather than regulating the debate format as a matter of election policy. US presidential debates are basically joint press conferences. We hold these people to very low standards.
-After his initial weaselly response on the Russian-Georgian conflict, [Obama] then condemns Russia, deciding that it is better to sound like McCain.
Hard for a conservative brain to process, I know, but the Georgia/Russia conflict actually is more complex than the news has made it out to be. By some reports the Georgians made the first moves militarily, and South Ossetia has many Russian citizens in it that Moscow has always pledged they would protect. They also went way overboard, knowing that with our military overstretched the US was to weak to make meaningful threats. Obama should stick to his guns, but in the end he has to dumb it down for people to identify with very simple, emotional concepts (which they can then use in Slashdot discussions). It's normal. McCain dumbed down his entire campaign. Remember his old moderate stances on immigration, abortion and foregin policy? That was 2000, this is 2008. Flip! Flop!
-was the only IL state senator to speak out on the statehouse floor against a measure that would prohibit "finishing an abortion" in the case of a botched abortion where the child was actually born alive, and still thinks the question of when life begins is above his pay grade.
It is above his pay grade. Anyone who tells you they have the answer to the question of when life begins is bullshitting you (though in their defense they are likely bulshitting themselves). This is not an issue made easy for absolutists - again, conservative brains hurt when this sort of thing happens so if you have one, try not to read too much of the following without aspirin: when a baby girl is born she already has the eggs she will potentially use to have children (and has had them for a while), and she came from eggs that had also been around for more than the lifetime of her mother. Both an egg and sperm are alive before they merge DNA and sprout a blastocyst. There's nothing particularly lively about a blastocyst - you wouldn't call it a "voter" - and there's no dead point in the cycle after which you could say life starts to exist. In fact the closest we can come to answering the question of when life begins is "about four billion years ago." Believe me, the question is over Warren Buffet's pay grade.
