YouTube Bans Gun and Knife Videos In the UK

PatPending writes with a depressing excerpt from the UK's Metro: "The Google-owned video-sharing site YouTube has decided to introduce the ban [on weapons-related videos] for the UK only amid widespread unease about the increase in knife crime in the country. 'We recognise that there has been particular concern over videos in the UK that involve showing weapons with the aim of intimidation, and this is one of the areas we are addressing,' a YouTube spokesperson said. 'I would like to see other internet service providers follow suit to reinforce our message that violence will not be tolerated either on the internet or in the real world,' she said."

    What wisdom.

Uhh, what would this have to do with the British government or laws, or the second amendment?

It has everything to do with it. How many knifing epidemics have you ever heard of in the United States?

Google decided to do this of their own free will.

Google very clearly did this in response to a request by U.K. officials. True, though they probably legally could have said no, but they chose to comply. Makes you wonder about the "Do No Evil" mantra, eh? If you consider political censorship of this nature to be something evil (or, at least, immoral), like I do, then Google's policy is probably better stated as: "Do No Evil, unless China, the U.K., or some other government asks us."

Excuse me, but you are citing a study almost 50 years old?

I dare say that things have changed a bit in the last half-century. Even if your cited study were valid then, what evidence do you have that it holds today? Technology and social circumstances have changed vastly since then. Do you honestly believe that there is no data more recent (and relevant) than that?

Are you REALLY trying to say that you do not know anything about the recent studies (government and University) regarding videogame and movie violence? Because it does appear that this is what you are trying to say.

I am not going to get pulled into that kind of argument. You are the one who is calling bullshit, so you have the obligation of demonstrating bullshit. And you need to present better evidence than half-century-old studies to support your position, in order to make that challenge successful.

As I stated to the other adjacent poster: this is NOT a controversial claim. On the contrary, it is, in fact, a fairly well-known body of statistics that has been widely reported, and fairly frequently at that.

Nor, for that matter, is discussion on Slashdot a formal debate. If you feel like proving (or attempting to disprove) my statement, feel free. If you actually do responsible research, you will find that I was correct. But I have no obligation to prove it to you, or interest in doing so.

You can expect all you want. But as I stated to the first reply, I am not going to get pulled into that kind of argument. I have better things to do with my time.

    Yawn. Usual moronic Yank argument.

I really don't know how people can argue that everyone having devices that can instantly kill makes people safer. Let's look at the gun issue in two ways, shall we?

APPROACH ONE: The stats approach: The homocide rate per 100000 people is 5.7 in the US. That's compared to 2.03 in the UK, 1.64 in France, and 0.5 in Japan.

APPROACH TWO: The logical approach: A robber bursts into your house. He's holding a loaded handgun with the safety off. To shoot you he has to point it at you and pull the trigger. To shoot him you have to get up, grab your gun, take the safety off and shoot him. Who do you think is going to win? A gun fight so massively favours the person who initiates it, that a gun can almost never be considered a defensive weapon. Sure if you ban them there's the odd occasion when someone might threaten you with a gun when you're unarmed, but if someone points a gun in your face and has the guts to pull the trigger, having a gun in your pocket won't make a huge difference. Besides, this scenario is extremely uncommon, as owning an illegal gun is so risky that you're not going to get one just for a few muggings.

As for the argument that it protects you from your government, oh please. Do you really think the public would stand up to the full force of the US military for long?
