OpenOffice.org 3.0 Is Officially Here

SNate writes "After a grinding three-year development cycle, the OpenOffice.org team has finally squeezed out a new release. New features include support for the controversial Microsoft OOXML file format, multi-page views in Writer, and PDF import via an extension. Linux Format has an overview of the new release, asking the question: is it really worth the 3.0 label?"

Fact: Bill Ayer's autobiography (Fugative Days) is written at 12th gade level and averages 23 words per sentence. Obama's first "autobiography" (Dreams from my father) is also written at a 12th grade level and averates 23 words per sentence. His second autobiography is written at a 9th grade level and averages 29 words per sentence.

Barack Obama, who had never written any previous works other than some "really bad poetry" was given a contract to write a book on race relations. Four years and one publisher later, he delivered an autobiography. Along the way, he met Bill Ayers, an English Professor who had experience writing autobiographies. He also helped launch his political career.

(He was also a terrorist in the 60s, but nobody gives a shit).

Bill Ayers helped edit his autobiography.

I hate to pick up on trolling, but Germany's former foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, was also strongly associated with leftist terrorists and even took part in street battles. However, he did a formidable and more than respectable job, since he had the discipline, power and will to change himself. Who is to say that Ayers could not have changed as well? If a university can recognise that he did, you might be able to do so too, just give it a try.
Besides: How can you be so arrogant as to think that you know how Ayers' background reflects on Obama, even if it is true that they are somehow connected?

You obviously don't know anything about the 60's. At the time, people under 40 mostly supported the Weathermen, because they knew then that their government did not represent them and was in the employ of the military industrial complex. And he was not a "terrorist" -- he was a revolutionary. There is a difference. Washington was a revolutionary. The difference between them is that Washington won. As for your analysis as proof. Are your really that stupid? Yes, yes, you are.

Okay, hang on. I love Obama, not just for his politics but for the kind of person he is, and I think slandering his character due to his association with Bill Ayers is a joke at best, but he was a terrorist. He blew up buildings, statues, whatever, in an attempt to use terror to get attention to his message. That does not compare against Washington, who led armies against armies. We were in the midst of a formally declared war between nations fought by armies.

If it makes you feel better to call Ayers a "revolutionary", then fine. His only casualties, from what I've read, were members of his own group through an accident while building bombs. Having said that, in my book, he was a domestic terrorist, just an atypically innocuous one.

I am holding on. I guess we differ on the definition. The British considered Washington a 'rebel' and today would call him a "terrorist" for sure, you cannot argue with that. The "armies against armies" only came later in the rebellion, prior to that it was small groups of people rebelling against the existing governmental structure. The fact the Ayers tried to avoid casualties is actually good evidence that he was not a "terrorist". A terrorist is someone who uses fear or "terror" to advance their political goals. Blowing up buildings may be a form of terrorism, but it's very mild in comparison to some of the acts we see today. I think if you read about what he said and did, his goal was not inspire terror, but to fight what he saw as an evil and unjust government that was in the process of slaughtering 1.5 to 3 million Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians. His goal was the overthrow of that government. There was a time, around 1968, when that seemed possible. And please be careful; if your definition of terrorism hinges on whether or not there is a "formally declared" war, then the USA is a terrorist state. If the criteria is the use of violence against non combatants is important then the "terror" bombings of WWII against German cities, and the later bombing of Hanoi, et al, were "terrorist" acts, so it looks like there are a lot of terrorists out there, including of course McCain and a lot of vets. It's a silly dichotomy anyway. Terrorism is really what the other guy does - right. "We" are "good". "They" are "bad". Here is the CIA definition: Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d): * The term 'terrorism' means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents. * The term 'international terrorism' means terrorism involving the territory or the citizens of more than one country. * The term 'terrorist group' means any group that practices, or has significant subgroups that practice, international terrorism. I think if you have a close look at the history of the American revolution you will find many instances of 'terrorism' as defined by the CIA.

I could, but I'd rather argue against this:

Here is the CIA definition: Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d): * The term 'terrorism' means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents. *

Washington did not attack "noncombatant targets," nor did he employ, "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion." (Merriam-Webster). Ayers did.

To keep this short (got work to do), Ayers doesn't fit the CIA definition, but he does fit the Merriam-Webster one. As for the U.S. being a terrorist state... that's a whole 'nother discussion, and one I'm not inclined to agree with you on, for the most part. (Iraq, on the other hand...)

Gary, it was nice chatting with you.
