Is Anyone Buying T-Mobile's Googlephone?
Hugh Pickens writes "Laura Holson writes in the NY Times that she 'wandered down to the T-Mobile store at Ninth Ave. and 43rd St. in New York City to see what kind of crowds — if any — were lining up to buy the new T-Mobile G1 which went on sale Wednesday' and saw no lines out the door, no crowding at the counter, and a complete lack of crowds. The iPhone appears to still be the gold standard and Etan Horowitz writes that the G1 'doesn't do a great job showcasing its potential. It isn't as intuitive as the iPhone, and it may take average users a while to figure out basic and advanced shortcuts and features' and 'may appeal more to techies who value open-source products and don't mind a somewhat steep learning curve.' Part of the reason for slow interest may also be that T-Mobile's 3G high-speed data network won't be up and running in many cities until the end of the year."
after I read "Laura Holson writes in the NY Times..."
I don't value any opinion from someone who writes for that rag.
Attention all planets of the Solar Federation! We have assumed control! - Neil Peart
It's quite possibly too late for Android. Apple already has a mature product in place, and has several million users. Another thing working for Apple is that they have the iPod Touch which allows the same platform to be used by people who don't want to switch to AT&T. At the very least, Google should have worked on creating something like an upgraded Nokia N810 that runs Android.
This are americans, my friend. They actually think George Bush won his elections.
Go figure.

Good lord - you idiots exist even outside the US?? Our system isn't perfect but its the best in the world, so put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Have you actually USED Apple products? I was given an iPod Touch 16GB as a gift. I used it for about a month, to make sure I gave it a fair shake, and I absolutely HATED it. Here's a short list of the problems I had with it:
- Slow. What kind of CPU did they put in this thing? Despite being lauded for web browsing, I always end up using my laptop instead of this thing because it is just too damned slow.
- Unreliable. It doesn't hold a WIFI signal very well. I've tried it with 3 different WIFI routers, and it has the same problem with all of them.
- Terrible documentation. Correction, that should say "NO documentation". Not a single sheet of instructions on using the thing was in the box. They appear to think that putting the crappy headphones in a white bag makes up for their inability to document how to use the damned thing.
- Un-intuitive. The "off" button is hidden. There is a sigle buttong on the front of the device and it is used for what? Switching applications. That's it. And yet, wwitching between browsing the web and other functions is mind boggingly slow, and when switching back it reloads the web page, making you wait AGAIN while it sloooowly loads. Switching between pages requires multiple "clicks" and swipes, instead of just putting tabs across the top like any other DECENT browser would, plus the thing is not able to multitask. Most of the bundled applications, like the alarm clock, notepad, calendar, contacts, etc are primitive and thus next to useless, forcing you to buy spend more money to buy applications from third parties. The f'ing calculator cannot even calculate a square root, for god sakes.
- Totally closed. You cannot install your own software unless you hack it. You need a proprietary USB adapter to charge it. You need heavy, buggy, proprietary Apple software to buy applications, load songs, or even just synchronize files to and from it. When other companies do this, they are crucified in the press.
- The orientation sensor is over sensitive and often flips the page from what you are reading when you shift around in your seat.
- The onscreen keyboard is a piece of shit. It is almost impossible to type with anything resembling speed.
So if you want a slow, buggy, aggrivating web browsing experience, buy an iPod Touch or an iPhone. If you want something that "just works", get a Google G1.
