God of War 3 Gameplay Unveiled

Over the weekend, Sony used Spike's Video Game Awards to release new information and a trailer for God of War 3, the final installment of the God of War series that is planned for sometime in 2009. The press release described a new game engine which brings "significant strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions being quadrupled since God of War 2, God of War 3 will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos' fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale with many more enemies on-screen and be able to interact with levels like never before." Gamecyte notes that the news contradicts early rumors that the game might be an MMO.

Say... you should buy a new pc too. Your old one is too slow for our new dynamic lighting effects, robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios.

    You don't mind do you?

DRM? Oh that... um.. yeah.. we don't call it that around here anymore. DRM is bad. Now we just call it the playability access virus. It won't hurt you. Much.

I wouldn't say appears. After all, it's being created by SCE Studios Santa Monica, with "SCE" meaning "Sony Computer Entertainment". If it wasn't a PS3 exclusive, there's no hope for the PS3 (if Sony's own studio has to port to other platforms in order for a title to succeed...).

And since GoW isn't ported to PC, it's a likely to stay PS3 only.

The fun part is that those who bought the cheap $400 PS3s can't play the predecessors on their shiny PS3 because those are PS2 only. (Of course, we can hope that GoW/GoW2 gets re-done for PS3, can't we? Just like Final Fantasy 7...).

You say the "cheap $400 PS3s", but isn't it true that NONE of the currently in production PS3s are downwardly compatible? Even though I have a PS2 that is working, I would actually pay more (yes, probably the $100 that a PS2 goes for) for the backward compatibility when I eventually (likely) get a PS3. But I thought that none of them were downwardly compatible anymore.

No version of the PS3 currently in production provides backwards compatibility with the PS2 (They all, however, can play PSOne games) but it's only been that way since August. You may still be able to find some new old stock that can play PS2 games, but it should be easy to find one on Ebay or Craiglist. From what I've seen, those sellers that know their PS2-compatible PS3s are one of a dying breed are indeed asking for a bit of a premium over an equivalent non-PS2-compatible model.

It would probably help with this series to also along with big eyes, to give Kratos a fluffy tail, just to make sure no one confuses it with real life. What gets passed as "gameplay footage" these days is saddening at best. The clip shows assumingly in-game animations, yes, but there is no actual playing going on. To save those who can't watch this the trouble, the video just shows off shiny new shaders and high res texturing detail (which is, admittedly, mildly alluring). Kratos is doing the typical moves found in God of War, God of War II, God of War: Chains of Olympus, ...

I'm excited for the game, most definitely, but this trailer completely misses anything interesting a prospective player or long-time fan might want to see, like the mythological beasts and characters and engaging story that the game series has brought to us in the past.

I never played the earlier games so perhaps it really is missing the point, as you say, and there's a lot more to the series than appears in this teaser. It did show some mythological beasts, though.

It is true that it didn't include anything I, a prospective player with a PS3, might want to see, but I don't think that was the point. As I said, it's a teaser, designed to start people talking about the game. Just the beginning of a huge cycle of hype, I'm sure (which isn't a bad thing if the game is genuinely good - I don't pay attention and usually don't know about games until they come out, anyway.)

All that said, is this really front-page material for Slashdot? I imagine those dying to find out about this game also read game websites. I think game discussion on slashdot is great, but not for stuff that isn't that important, like this.

The main thing here was that they showed the actual in game engine in action, and not all CGI sequences. With the game so far off, I couldn't expect them to have the actual gameplay ironed out enough to justify a full gameplay video.
