Tech Companies That Won't Survive 2009

buzzardsbay writes "Fresh off their annual market survey, eWEEK channel folks have compiled the list of tech vendors their readers think will fail, falter, or be sold off in 2009. It's important to note that these aren't the opinions of the magazine or its editors. The list comes from folks who work in IT, mostly technology resellers, who are out in the field selling, installing and maintaining this stuff. If there were ever canaries in the tech coal mine, they'd be these service and solution providers who live and die by the slightest shift in the markets. Some of the companies on this list, like Sun and AMD, are shocking because of their size. Others, like CA and Symantec, not so surprising." What other companies are headed for implosion, or should be if all were right with the universe?

I'm sorry, but how did this make to the front page? The selections on the list are wrong or obvious, but the list itself is a freaking flash slideshow with only 1 item per slide! The editors need to do their jobs.

    1) Novell

Probably not - Suse Linux is a great seller for them.

    2) NetApp

Probably. They have no real products!

    3) Checkpoint

    Who cares?

    4) McAfee (let's hope so!)

Already close to being dead and buried - they have no viable product, and even the Windoze morons are seeing them as snake-oil salesmen!

    5) Salesforce.com

    Probably.

    6) Juniper, CA, and AMD are tied for sixth place.

All of them are in rude good health, and will survive.

    7) Sun, no surprise there

Sun will, like "The Dude", endure. There are too many companies tied to expensive Sun kit for them to fall over.

    8) Citrix

Maybe. However, they're selling huge numbers of their thin clients.

    9) Symantec (again, let's hope so!)

In a worse state than even McAfee. Good riddance!

    10) VMware

Too much virtualisation going on these days for them to be damaged...

    1) No, Novell has huge money reserves. It is not huge indication of survival, but they did minimization of expenses year ago, so it could be their chance to actually improve their performance. Of course, people would vote them just because their "Microsoftised" Linux. Sorry guys, it ain't gonna happen; 2) NetApp - maybe, don't have lot of actual products to offer; 3) Checkpoint - lot of cash, have actual products, which is highly valuated; 4) McAfee - wet dreams, but no 5) Salesforce.com - huge posibility 6) No for AMD and CA, Juniper could be bought by Cisco or someone bigger 7) Sun - sorry, this is not "I-hate-them-and-they-should-go-away" list :) Maybe Sun isn't perfect, but again, as Novell, they went trough forced restruct and I don't think that this crisis will make them disappear. 8) Citrix could have be gone to the way of Dodo already some time ago, but they seemingly still have to offer something. Also if there are lot of thin client businesses open up as an answer to cutting expenses of IT dep, they could have a chance; 9) Symantec - again, like it or not, antivirus will still be sold in huge numbers and still user boxes will be happy-slacky zombies; 10) VMware - will be bought by someone. Xen and KVM eats it's breakfast; So one could be big posibility to go down, two or three could be bought, and rest of others will just lay off huge numbers and will be more or less fine.
