NVIDIA's 55nm GeForce GTX 285 Launched
Visceralini writes "NVIDIA is launching yet another high-end 3D graphics offering, an optimized version of their top shelf GeForce GTX 280 single GPU card, dubbed the GeForce GTX 285.
This new GeForce is a
55nm die-shrunk version of the legacy GTX 280 with lower power consumption characteristics that don't require an 8-pin PCI Express connector, rather just a pair of more standard 6-pin plugs.
Performance
metrics are shown here in a number of the latest game titles including
Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2 and Mirror's Edge. The new GTX 285 is
about on par or slightly faster than a GTX 280 but with
less power draw and some room for overclocking over the reference design."

40W less while idle (vs. 280), @ $0.12 kWh, means if I can pick one up for $400 (I can dream, can't I?), it will have paid for itself - through power savings - in less than 10 years!! I know what I'm spending my tax refund on!!
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure everything I just said is completely wrong.
NetBSD loses out to Oracle, SAP, ERP, and DB2 in commercial settings. Additionally NetBSD lacks 24/7 support backed by Fortune 500 companies.
NetBSD is hampered by poor scalability and its limited rudimentary SMP. NetBSD also lacks a production ready journaling file system.
NetBSD lacks the latest and greatest Java environment. In fact there is no official Java support for NetBSD.
In short, NetBSD looks like yesterday's fish wrap when you compare it to enterprise ready systems.
Linus Torvalds is a god damn thief!!! When I installed Linux it asked me for my credit card number. Two days later I got a call from Wachovia asking me if I had purchased $400 worth of Totino's pizza rolls and Mountain Dew (I hadn't). Let this be a warning to all of you out there on the Internet.

- The current best performing single card is the GeForce GTX 295
- The best performance setup was (before this card) a tossup between dual GeForce GTX 295s (quad SLI) and three GeForce GTX 280s (three-way SLI).
- The overclocking potential of the GeForce GTX 285 & reduced power consumption might make a three-way 285 setup preferrable to a dual 295 setup (for enthusiasts)

Pittsburgh police detectives are trying to identify a man who sexually
assaulted two women this week in Shadyside and Hazelwood by crawling
through open windows.
The rapist assaulted the first woman in the early morning hours
Wednesday and the second Thursday morning.
"I understand its been hot and humid and people leave their windows
open, but people need to make sure they do so in a way so that someone
can't gain entry to their house," Pittsburgh police Deputy Chief Earl
Woodyard said.
Police described the suspect as a thin black man in his 20s, between
5-foot-7 and 6 feet tall. He had braided hair and wore a do-rag, police
said.
In the first assault, he crawled through an open, first-floor window of
an apartment building in the 6300 block of Fifth Avenue in Shadyside
between 1:15 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. The woman living there was sleeping and
heard a noise but didn't get up to investigate. He entered the woman's
bedroom and sexually assaulted her before leaving through the front
door, Woodyard said.
About 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, a woman living in a multi-unit home in the
700 block of Hazelwood Avenue in Hazelwood awoke to find a man in her
bedroom. The man, who fit the description of the Shadyside attacker,
held a do rag over his face as he sexually assaulted the woman, Woodyard
said. The suspect had crawled through an open window.
When the suspect left the Hazelwood victim's apartment, she saw him
drive away in a tan, newermodel sedan. That victim told police her
attacker smelled heavily of cologne.
"Because the second victim didn't hear any noises, but awoke to find him
in her bedroom, we don't know how long he was in the apartment,"
Woodyard said. "We also don't know if anything was taken from the
victims during either assault."
In both incidents, the victims screamed once, and the suspect told them
to stop. But both victims screamed again.
Woodyard said the suspect didn't threaten either victim with a weapon.
"It's possible he may get more courageous and strike again since both of
these incidents happened so close together," Woodyard said.
"Particularly since the second assault happened at a time when it's
light outside and people are moving about."
Police are investigating whether the suspect targeted the women in
advance. The first victim is married, but was home alone, and the second
victim lived alone, Woodyard said. Both victims are in their 20s.
Woodyard said investigators are encouraging any other victims or anyone
with information to call city sex crimes detectives at 4123237141.
Hairy Heron?
More like Hairy Ballsack, am I right?
Dear Slashdot
My name is Mike and I am serving the first week of a 10 year sentence in Federal Prison for severe SEC violations. I am very scared and I didn't know what else to do. I guess I have 5 good minutes to type this cry out for help until Tyrone and the crew come for me and give me what they call "Mandatory Showertime". I mean I have been exposed to more male cock in the first 3 days here than I have ever cared to know in my first 30 years of life. I guess it was some sort of sick joke that they gave me a big black cell mate named Tyrese who also part of Tyrones crew. As such he has first dibs on me or as he says "first dick in me". The nigger has beaten me senseless the first day here as he seems to get a real kick out of it and has repeatedly raped me and that's not even the worst of it. I never knew a man could cum 7 times in a row and with that I hadn't been able to get any sleep in the past day or so. The first time I met Tyrone was at our first shower time. Tyrese had "persuaded" me to go into the shower room and that's when I met the whole crew. There must have been 19 prison niggers in there and when the guards pulled out, thats when I was given a gangraping that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Could you imagine 19 giant black cocks repeatedly ass raping and mouth fucking you? I think not, and don't think these guys went in one at a time. I swear it must have been 3 in my ass and 2 in my mouth at one point. I was in tears hearing Tyrone laughing at me saying "This be your life now cracka, you our bitch now". I still have the sharpie mark on my ass that says "Tyrone's ho". Uh oh it looks like it's mandatory shower time again. I think I am going to hang myself when Tyrese is out raping another white prisoner. Thanks for listening.
It's funny that I had only recently been thinking and praying about these queerest of computers. It certainly is true that Apple computers are very popular amongst the homosexual communities, the fact that these computers are so popular indicates the depths to which our great nation has sunk to.
The Apple corporation logo is naturally an apple with a bite taken out of it. Is it not a coincidence that Eve tempted Adam with an Apple? The apple is a symbol of defiance against God, and was an obvious choice for a company whose primary objectives include the liberalisation of all media, and which activly finances the political party that hates God.
When I first saw an apple computer (called a Mac, after the popular fast food product) with it's "fruity" design, I had assumed that it was some kind of obsolete product aimed at latte sipping east-coast homosexual designers. This initial observation turned out to be only half true:
The apple computers are not as obsolete as their gaudy designs suggest - the Apple computer company, based in that Sodomite Central, Cupertino CA, have invested a great deal of money in keeping up with more mainstream American PC brands like Dell or IBM, however rather than compete on computing power, practicality or ease of use the Apple company prefer to emphasize "eye-candy". If you are the sort of person who loves nothing more than gazing for hours at an aquarium full of brightly colored fish, then the feeling of using an Apple desktop will be most familiar.
Note the oddly-shaped apple-mouse. Unike modern computer mice, the Apple product has only one button. This is because historically Apple computer failed to license the patent for including buttons on mice. Since most apple computers are used as children's toys, their homosexual owners have barely noticed this deficiency, they are too busy thinking about sodomy worry about their computer's obvious deficiencies.
Windows appear to swim around, distorting and melding into the "dock", with almost psychedellic fluidity. Parts of the desktop become inexplicably transparant, and then return to normal or else swirl into oblivion. Control over windows is achived not through familiar buttons (like Window's "X"), but candy colored blobs, which are designed to remind the user of "Extasy" tablets. I suspect that the Apple design team must have been doing more drugs than the average touring funk-band.
The Apple OSX platform is missing a large number of common and esential productivity tools commonly used on the Windows platform. For example the endearing BonziBuddy can only be found on Windows, and therefore will only run on a Mac that has been upgraded to Boot-Camp and Windows. I suspect that this is exactly what most Mac-owners will feel forced to do.
Naturally, the big question is, does the "alternative lifestyle" approach to computer design really pay-off for the people who count: The Users?
I think the answer is no. Having used computers all my life, I consider myself an expert in the day to day tasks of computing. The Microsoft Windows operating system makes installing, uninstalling, defragmenting, and removal of viruses and spyware trivially easy. It's a shame that the Apple company (who unbelievably are much praised for their interface design) had not thought to make these everyday tasks simpler.
As I have pointed out on a number of occasions both Linux and AppleMac fail to unclude a disk-defragmentor, a personal firewall, a standard method for installing or removing software or even a system repair utility. Microsoft introduced all of this in their epoch-making "Windows Me" edition. Linux users have had to get used to the lack of these essential productivity tools, however Linux is universally acknowledged as a cheap immitation of Windows. Mac on the other-hand is marketed as a full-price premium product.
Apple computers come preloaded with iTunes which only works with Apple's oddly-coloured iPod. The Apple Mac cannot run the more popular "Windows Media Player", and is therefore incompatib
...who lack unlimited funds, the best buy at the moment are the ATi HD 48x0 series cards, which have ridiculously good price/performance and will run any current or near-future game easily at high detail.
Read Pynchon.
But can it run Vista?
Pff, Fallout 3 as benchmark.
I want to see hardware benchmarks that fits the software description of "Software written for the future machines", or isn't this future enough?
Unless you live way up north or play games only in the winter, dealing with 840 Watts of heat is going to be problematic for a dual GTX295 setup. Summer is worse in that you now have to pump out that heat through the AC system.
People often will bitch about their cable/DSL bill, but have they ever tried to calculate the monthly cost of electricity their gaming rig racks up alone?
Some of us don't care. :D

My 8800 GTS died yesterday, wonderful vertical lines down the screen (lines of characters in text mode) and unexpectedly booting in VGA res.
I looked online for a new card, saw a 285 being sold for cheaper than any 280, and looked it up. I saw that it was basically a 280 v2, so I ordered one. Even at 9:40pm I was offered next day delivery by ebuyer, so I took it. I got the order dispatched email at 10:20pm.
I didn't realise until a little later that its release date was yesterday! That's some crazy timing.
the parent post misses the fact that for dual and more 280 setups, you need a huge case and a kickass power supply. ati 4870s are much easier to fit in a single standard case, and give similar or better performance.

Preface: I own none of the cards in question, nor any of their relatives, and am not a partisan observer or even a gamer. I keep up with graphics cards to assess their utility for co-processing.
8600GT usually bests the 3870 for a similar price.
Shenanigans. I've never seen a review or review site discover this in testing or make such a claim. Perhaps you meant to say "3650" instead of "3870" because that one fits your description. The 3870 is in a higher league entirely. The specs aren't even close; there's no way for [nvidia|ati]-friendliness in an engine to overcome so large a gap:
Model in question-Gshader/s-Gtex/s-GB/s
8600GT, (DDR2) -- 37.8 - -- 8.6 -- 12.8
8600GT (GDDR3) -- 37.8 - -- 8.6 -- 22.4
9600GT - - - - - 104 - - - 20.8 -- 57.6
9800GT - - - - - 168 - - - 33.6 -- 57.6
3850 - - - - - - 213 - - - 10.7 -- 53
3870 (512MB) - - 248 - - - 12.4 -- 57.6
3870 (1024MB) -- 248 - - - 12.4 -- 72
Recently the 9600GT was priced similarly to the faster/better 8600GTs at ~$85.
What? The slowest 9600GT is faster than the fastest 8600GT. By a lot. It was a huge disappointment upon introduction, falling far short of the performance level expected of a "mid-range" offering when the 8 series was released.
The 9600GT utterly demolishes both in virtually everything...
Again, shenanigans.
The 9600GT 3870 are tightly matched in present games, but the 3870 has 150% more shader power despite the 9600GT's 70% texel advantage and thus will perform much better as shader programs continue to get more complex and play an even larger part in scene rendering.
[the 9600GT] was within 10-15% of the 9800 GT...
Not likely. Look at the specs. Give a source; if one supports your claim, it was obviously a memory-bound game (poor engine implementation) rather than texture- or shader-bound, because the 9800GT has at least 50% more of each on an otherwise similar design. Most games don't suffer from engineers botching such a basic element of engine design; memory bandwidth is by far the scarcest resource (i.e. the bottleneck) for your game, always.
The 3870 supposedly has better hardware than both...
A lot better. As long as your game/settings want an normal amount of shading power, you use AA/AF, your app can exploit instruction-level parallelism as easily as thread-level parallelism, etc. The relation between the 3870 and the 9600GT is borne out in tons of games and non-games. But, you say:
...basically all recent drivers (since at least 8.8) appear to botch the GPU load (with fixed clock speeds mind, no power throttling) so that most games only use 30-50% of the GPU's capacity.
Appear to? To whom? This would represent an enormous crippling of performance on a very visible product (and after competing favorably with the 9600GT in the game hardware press and elsewhere) and subsequent failure to remedy. There was a ~20% performance hit with the 8.8 release compared to 8.7, but your "30-50% capacity" implies it was nowhere near "capacity" before that. In other words: source? reasoning? definition for "capacity"? [I know the 38x0 overspent silicon on the memory implementation that didn't benefit as much as they thought it would, but you're still being very ambiguous with that term.]
It's a bad feeling when you get a low price on a decent 3870 GDDR4, only to have to have your older 8600 consistently performing better...
Buying new stuff that doesn't work better than your old stuff when you thought it would is certainly a bummer. But I just don't buy that an 8600 anything is faster than a 3870, ever, because both the specs and the real-world testing in the press show the latter with such a colossal advantage over the former. The 8600GT was a lacklustre, first-gen 8-series that slipped from its target to a main
For a review that has all the game benchmarks AND is also fun to read, with insightful analysis and clever commentary, check out The Tech Report's comparo of the GTX 285 to SIXTEEN competitor cards and configs. Why settle for just benchmark results and technical jargon when there's humor in the pixels?
I don't keep up much on the advancement of video cards and graphics processing but I recall several months ago (perhaps almost a year?) that raytracing was trying to get traction again as a viable rendering technology for computer games. And now lately I've also been hearing a lot of about how fast graphics cards have become and how many cores they have.
With all this in mind, how close are we to having games being rendered via raytracing? Is it still not possible even with all the hardware available now?
sry but those benchmarks are not even close to right. since when does the 280 score 2000 points more than the 4870 1 gig. sry not a chance. when you guys post benchmarks, at least post correct ones. and 1920x1200 at 4x aa and 16x af is not a valid benchmark because those are not 3d marks default (and online comparable for that matter) settings. this is not a nvidia fan boy cry, i run nvidia myself lol but i know what the 4870's can really do.
