Leaked Star Wars Battlefront III Footage

rambo_ando writes "GameSpot UK journalist Luke Anderson received a tip from an anonymous tipster and Free Radical Design employee today who wanted to show off internal video of Battlefront III , which the games studio, now under administration, has lost the rights to develop. The source, a confirmed Free Radical employee, said of the game, 'it was going to be the best ever.' The five-minute video features gameplay of Stormtroopers, Ewoks, Tauntauns, The Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighters, A-Wings and what looks to be Boba Fett's ship, Slave I — as well as a prominent FRD logo watermark throughout. According to the person who posted the video on YouTube, 'this video was taken in an internal show-and-tell Alpha meeting back in November.'"

      ... You know, given what "under administration" MEANS (think Chapter 11 if you're American) making money WOULD HAVE BEEN important :)

    The blog doesn't add additional details to the video, so you may as well skip the inevitable wordpress collapse. Seems like this guy was trying to generate some publicity for his new site (9 posts total).

      That is not surprising, considering this "leaked" video is probably just a marketing stunt to begin with. Everyone wants a little time in the spot light, and there is no better way to generate hype that having "leaked footage" on some random blog.

    That was said about SWBFII, too, but then it came out with only one single-player campaign.

      I played SWBFII and disliked the game quite a bit. Republic Commando which came out around the same time was far superior in all aspects.

      Very different games, IMHO.

      The attraction of SWBF is to have a big fight. It's not a pure-blooded FPS, it's a fun few minutes of blasting frantically. And whilst the campaign aspect is fun, it's just as fun to have a few drinks, stick a few arena's on random and go for it.

      Republic Commando was an FPS with an engaging storyline. Different headspace.

      That makes very little sense.

      Battlefront is a multiplayer battle game, Commandos was a single-player game. You cant really compare the two.

      The former is a LAN party game (one of the best ever, IMO), the latter is a play at home by yourself game.

      Republic Commando had great potential for squad-based multi-player. The single-player was incredibly fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed it - although being a very scripted, linear path reduced replayability quite a bit. But all the time I played through it, I was expecting this awesome multi-player combat, but it ended up being a typical Deathmatch/CTF, except with Star Wars weapons.

      Much potential...but, like most games these days, the developers/publishers failed to take advantage of the opportunity they had.

      Battlefront II is quite fun.

    It had Jar-Jar and ewoks in it, and not as cannon fodder.

    Other than that, it did look kinda cool, but looked like a render, not actual gameplay.

      I agree with the parent.

      Maybe I'm just being an old grouch (at 29) but I want capital ship battles. I want squadrons of fighters engaging in battle. We have the technology, why do they refuse to make this kind of stuff and do Lego StarWars instead?

      With current MMO technology one would think that a whole host of possibilities would open up. With current single player gamer technology wouldn't it be quite possible to design an immersive simulator to rival God himself?

      At the very least an update to their classic flight sims seems like a sure-fire hit.

      Yeah, most of the Star Wars fan community wants them to make another flight sim game. They haven't given us one since X-Wing Alliance!

      Look at Battlefront 3, though, I have to wonder: Do they THINK they're making a good crossover between flight sim and ease of play? It would capture people from both crowds, casual player and harder-headed fan

      Do they think that reducing the semantic details of the game allows a broader storyline that is more accessible more immersive, or something else? ie you fly a starship into an enemy hangar and then get out in order to fight your way through the ship.

        I remember making names for EVERY pilot icon in X-Wing to coincide with the names from the movies. It was just amazing to feel like you were really affecting the outcome of a campaign with the Rebellion or Empire. The new Battlefront (nor the old ones) doesn't really feel like that. It feels like I was dropped into the middle of something and I have absolutely no connection to my character or what is going on. It feels cold and detached (a little like George Lucas, frankly).

    I can't be the only one who used the first game for nothing but playing the battle of Hoth over and over. Single-player, because I wasn't dedicated enough to the game to want to play it online.

    The second one was horrible for that. There were slight improvements to the Hoth map, but far more harm was done to it than good.

    Also, I found single-player mode in II to be nearly impossible. Not the campaign, but the "conquer the galaxy"-type single-player thing, or individual maps played with bots. Even on its easiest setting my bots were incapable of holding two of the victory locations while I went after a third. They were too far apart for me to be always bouncing around defending the ones we already had, and the moment I left a point it came under dispute again. This happened over and over. The time it took me to run to a nearly-undefended enemy point, blast the 2-3 guys who tried to defend it, then stand there while it transfered to my side let the enemy take at least one of my other points. I never managed to win a single one of those maps, and while I'm not a god at FPS games, I'm pretty damn far from being bad. The only exception was Hoth, but I'd played it a ton of times and it's a mostly linear map.

    I don't know what other people thought of II, but I uninstalled it after just a couple of weeks and haven't even considered trying it again. I still install the first one every now and then, though, just so I can take another crack at those AT-ATs in my snowspeeder :) Hopefully III will feature a larger, better Hoth map. Otherwise I've got no use for it.

      I too loved 1 over 2, mainly because of the Hoth map. Also I found the Cloud City map to be very difficult and I might only win half the time at it. I like maps like that where I don't know if I'll win or not.

      The only reason I played BF2 at all was to play as a Jedi. I'd play maps with ridiculous odds stacked against me but I would play as a Jedi hero and that was awesome. Oh yeah, and playing the maps where it's only heros playing against you, that's fun too. :P

      The single player mode shouldnt have even been included, other than as a tutorial.

      The game solely exists for LAN-party style multiplayer sessions.

    But I loved SWBF 2.

    I'm looking forward to this, but a playable ewok? Who the hell wants that?

      The only reason my girlfriend (yeah, yeah) usually wants to play videogames (which I don't play very often anyway) with me is so that she can be a Wookie in Battlefront 2 - so it's not as dumb as you might think. In fact it seems pretty smart to me.

      I've been thinking that a third game was way overdue - I hope it gets released at some point; this is disappointing news. That, or they put out some decent Star Wars games like in the good old days (X-Wing, Dark Forces, etc.) The Battlefront series are the best "current" Star Wars games - the packaging for Battlefront 2 states that it's the sequel to the best selling Star Wars game of all time - and it's taking them forever to put out a next-gen sequel. I don't understand it, because they're guaranteed to make tons of money from it!

    The video sows some cool art, 3rd person running and flying and some cutscenes but almost no real gameplay. This game was a *long* way from finished.

    "lost the rights to develop" Yeah that sucks. I've been looking forward to this game for awhile now. There is just something fun about being a storm trooper and shooting ppl!
