Shuttleworth Announces Karmic Koala

An anonymous reader writes to mention that Mark Shuttleworth has announced the next release in the horribly alliterative Ubuntu family, "Karmic Koala." The new version hopes to include a newer, shinier, faster startup, better small screen support, a spruced-up desktop look (no more brown), and many minor tweaks and updates. "A newborn Koala spends about six months in the family before it heads off into the wild alone. Sounds about perfect for an Ubuntu release plan! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you in Barcelona, and before that, at a Jaunty release party. Till then, cheers."

Brown is the color of SHIT.

If brown isn't a good idea for a portable music player than it's not a good idea for a UI theme unless, of course, that theme is "clogged public toilet".

Brown is the color of dirt, mud, shit, cockroaches, and many other pleasant things. And don't try telling your woman that it's "chocolate". Because chocolate isn't nice when it's coming out your ass.

Bad name. This release should be named "Klepto Kike".

Not only that, but Ubuntu is also quite unstable (on the desktop).

I'm not kidding... Windows is rock-solid these days (since about XP SP2), can't tell for MacOS but I'd guess it is too.

Linux *was* rock-solid once too, a few years back when it was still considered a major failure on the desktop, and now with Ubuntu always implementing new beta-quality software (just to say "hey look we got this awesome new technology!") the stability has really suffered a lot. We see regular X lockups (reboot time), boot problems, updates which cause some things to not work anymore, and so on... it's like Windows 9x all over again!

I'd rather use Debian or Arch or something along those lines and spend more time configuring it than using this unstable piece of crap called Ubuntu. But I don't have the time to tinker anymore!

After using Linux for about 10 years I've switched back to Windows. Because it just works (reliably!) without having to invest a lot of time.

And I'm not the only one who left it behind. A lot of hardcore Linux users already switched to OS X, which is growing rapidly. Linux always stays at ~1% market share, and I doubt it will ever grow bigger. Not if it goes on like right now.

Meh. Don't bother. When I first tried Ubuntu 8.04, I believe it was, I found many jarring UI problems, and reported all of them. They were marked in the end as 'not a problem' or whatever. I don't even remember anymore what the classification was, but it was clear the developer marking them hadn't even read the full description. On one or two there was a request for more information, which was nonsensical in the context. This is how an Ubuntu developer closes many bugs in a day, I suppose. Very productive...
