The researchers have built an actual device to demonstrate the effect that has a diameter about that of a human hair. This is a potentially game-changing discovery that could affect battery and other technologies. Is this due to the scale of the device/experiment or is it a limitation in the output that they can get it to generate so far?

A alien stranded here needed a way to signal his alien buddies, so helped in the invention of (actually, I think they were magic mufflers, but...) a technology that just happened to create a signal that would be heard halfway across the universe. I don't remember what happened next, maybe the Vulcans showed up...
