Review of GNOME 2.26 and GTK+ 2.16

devg writes "The GNOME development community recently announced the official release GNOME 2.26, the latest version of the open source desktop environment for Linux. It adds the Brasero disc burning software, UPnP support in the Totem media player, and basic support for video chat in the Empathy instant messaging client. GNOME 2.26 will be shipped in upcoming Linux distributions, including Fedora 11 and Ubuntu 9.04. Some early reviews show that it is an incremental improvement with some good additions. GNOME 2.26 is accompanied by the release of GTK+ 2.16, a new version of the widget toolkit that is used to build the desktop environment. Ars Technica has published a detailed programming tutorial with code examples that demonstrate how developers can use the new features of GTK+ 2.16 in their own applications. Users can test GNOME 2.26 by downloading one of the official Foresight-based VM or ISO images via BitTorrent."

As Slashdot is an international site, and I don't give two hoots about Barack Obama, the answer is 'no'.

I can comprehensively say that I, and I'm sure many others on Slashdot, find a new GNOME release -- particularly one with MAPI support -- far more interesting than the economy of the US. Now take your trolling somewhere people care about such things, one of those right-wing sites for example.

      He got fucking cancer,
Now what do you think of that

My old man was a dustman,
      He had cancer too,
      Silly fucking arsehole,
He had it up the flue

He had so much fucking cancer,
      It drove me fucking mad,
He said "I've got fucking cancer",
And he was my fucking dad

Oh, what a boring cunt he was,
      Going on all day,
      About having cancer,
And being too gone on the way

      Ohhhhhhh ... he had ...

      Cancer in his wig,

And worst of all, the worst of it, he had this fucking cough! He went:

      Heurgh! Heurgh!

      Heurgh! Heurgh!
      Heurgh! Heurgh!
      Heurrrrrgghhhhh ...

Linux just isn't ready for the desktop yet. It may be ready for the web servers that you nerds use to distribute your TRON fanzines and personal Dungeons and Dragons web-sights across the world wide web, but the average computer user isn't going to spend months learning how to use a CLI and then hours compiling packages so that they can get a workable graphic interface to check their mail with, especially not when they already have a Windows machine that does its job perfectly well and is backed by a major corporation, as opposed to Linux which is only supported by a few unemployed nerds living in their mother's basement somewhere. The last thing I want is a level 5 dwarf (haha) providing me my OS.
