Slashdot Launches User Achievements
In a concerted effort to compete with more popular MMOs like World of Warcraft, we've decided to add an Achievement system to Slashdot. We've retroactively granted around 900,000 achievements to our logged in users. You can view them from your user page, or you can see my list if you're curious what a REAL achiever looks like. Many achievements have been sprinkled throughout the system and are awaiting discovery by dedicated Slashdot users, but a starter list of achievements is in the FAQ. I'll toss you one freebie: you can register your wow main for points if you're that kind of person.
Now go forth and achieve!
I (and many many others) have an achievement called "The Maker" ... what does that mean? It's not listed in the FAQ.
Also, how are you computing the total number of Achievements? If you add up my achievements (and if I add the powers of two I get closer) but it doesn't come out to be the number you posted.
Also, if I have CmdrTaco's attention, why not leave this up? You've written the code for it and although it will certainly tax your database (default awards were handed out on different days) to update these values for everyone, why not leave it in place? Are you afraid this would increase karma whoring (it's in powers of 2 anyways) or produce negative effects?
For those of you without Warcraft characters, you add it to your user page and then it appears on the right of your user page as a hyper link to the armory (check out my user page). Then you get a +1 achievement with Level 80 (or I guess whatever level your main is) on your Achievements page.
My work here is dung.

What do you mean? Its April 1st in America so it has to be April 1st everywhere! I mean jeez, America is like, the time standard, get an education, man!
I do not like this feature or the fact that I can not turn it off. Especially the 'read slashdot for [x] consecutive days' part. This is an encroachment of my privacy, where is it going to stop? Are you going to list the dates and times I have read slashdot, and what stories? There goes my job. Kind of surprising and shocking, that slashdot would be the one to sell my privacy down the river like this... And not even to the lowest bidder.. JUST DID IT, FOR NO REASON AT ALL.
Not necessarily... Don't you remember OMGPONIES!

From the FAQ:
The achievements system was launched on April fools day of 2009 in order to allow for certain joke achievements, but the system itself is a real one. This allows Slashdot users to track accomplishments and milestones (and stroke the epeen, which is what it's all about anyway) as they use the site.
Achievement or it didn't happen
I can't believe you don't know what a Hasemalphaginnojinglanaporphomism is.
Since slashdot is about 14 hours late with the april fools, will we expect this for another 24 hours, well into April 2nd?
Except, they didn't just throw a static "haha, gotcha" page up... Slashdot really has implemented this system.
They might not leave it up after today, but I don't know if you can call an actual, working system of award-tallying a proper "April Fools" hoax...

Its only a matter of time before slashdot comment bots flood the forums, farming EXP and gold and ruining the slashdot economy.
Is it sad that I am more likely to recognize you and your posts by your sig than your name or UID?
Be insightful and you can be a philosopher!
P.S. - Mods, this one is informative or you'll break the chain.
If I mod you up, it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with what you've said, sorry.
In a post from 2002, SexyKellyOsbourne did it and has no achievement for it.
For a number of years I've wanted a slashdot greasemonkey extension called something like "slashback" which would restrict all comments to people with UID lower than your own, thus returning slashdot to the same user community that got you to sign up in the first place.
I'd respond to this, but unfortunately I can't see your post.
A new Firefox extension appears!

Oh, and in case anyone needs help getting the "Spend all my modpoints" achievement, I'd be happy to accept Funny mods. Here, I'll even tell a penguin joke.
I can has funny? :D

And my first post is to get an achievement? Way to pop the cherry /.
He can't see his post either since his UID is not lower than his UID, but that's ok because it helps it more closely match the community before he signed up
Plus I have 'The Cheater' achievement! (Truthfully, achievements can serve a nice function to the site: we actually intend to use a few of them for legitimate purposes, starting with tutorial type functions: all major parts of Slashdot have an corresponding achievement, so getting them all requires you to explore much of the site's functionality).
Pants are still optional, but recommended for you.
