    And that means rebooting.

    Fuck that.

Ubuntu is linux-based, not Windows. We're not used to rebooting all the time.

Aye, you will be punished for expressing a negative opinion, no matter how prevalent, but you are certainly not alone. Ubuntu has a few strikes against it from the get go. The name "Ubuntu" and its doo-doo brown wallpaper, both a side effect of Mark Shuttleworth's African roots. Sorry, but most people picture Africa and imagine a starving child covered with flies, blood diamonds, and HIV. Stereotypes to be sure, but Africa just doesn't have enough positive attributes to make it fit for use in branding products.

Then you have Linux itself. While socially inept programmers are attracted to Linux development, highly talented and creative graphic artists are not. Dare I say they avoid Linux like the plague. It's simply not rewarding for them. Both Microsoft and Apple hire people with an eye for what looks good, and it shows. That, coupled with the fact that the majority of Linux users just don't care how bad it looks because they either run a server or spend 8 hours a day looking at terminal, IRC, and Emacs windows. For Christs sakes, you've still got people using Pine to read email purely for nostalgic reasons. They just don't care how bad it looks to anyone else.

I was wondering when someone would do a Growl-like piece of software for *NIX without all of the nice themes and without per-application settings.

Chalk up another one for free software innovation.
