BioShock 2 Multiplayer Details Revealed
2K Games has revealed information about the multiplayer portion of BioShock 2, which will be developed by Digital Extremes. Multiplayer will be a prequel story that takes place prior to Rapture's fall, where "players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of Plasmids and Tonics in the underwater city of Rapture that was first explored in the original BioShock." The press release says players will gain experience points which they can spend to gain access to "new Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics that can be used to create hundreds of different combinations, allowing players to develop a unique character that caters to their playing style." It will also expand on the BioShock story.
Is my mouse sensitivity going to change randomly every time I respawn and take ~2 minutes to return to normal?

I really wonder how much casual gamer friendly they'll make it this time. Anyway I'm not going to buy this game because as a fan of the System Shock series I expected a bit more of Bio"shock".
This reminds me of the time I heard they were going to add multiplayer to Metroid Prime 2. It's something nobody was really asking for and that the game simply didn't need because it's strengths were elsewhere. I'd be fine with this existing since another team is working on it. Alright, cool, that means no resources will be taken from the main game. But what bothers me is that they're tying elements of the story into this mode, which I find absolutely infuriating.
How many multiplayer games on Xbox Live are abandoned a few weeks or months after launch? The big shooters might be able to carve their own niche out of the playerbase, and some of the arcade games based on card games and such can retain players. Beyond that the multiplayer landscape is littered with also-rans, with nobody playing them but a handful of achievement-hording players who arrange games for that specific purpose. (Locking achievements away in soon to be abandoned multiplayer modes is another gripe of mine, but that's another thread.)
A ton of this game's plot is told through audio cues. Diaries and NPC conversations added a lot to my treks through Rapture, and in a lot of cases I would go find a defensible location just so I could listen to the latest diary in peace. This is going to be a lot more difficult with xxxSEPHIROTH666xxx cursing a blue streak in a squeaky tween voice over the headset.
Bioshock had a great atmosphere and a well-written story (final 10% notwithstanding), and those were the primary draws for me in that game. It'll drive me nuts knowing that part of the story is locked away in a mode that I might not be able to access beyond the first week after launch.
Gee, I dunno. I saw BioShock as an artistic discourse on mesmerism (a la MK-ULTRA) and its societal and private influences from WWI to the post-Cold War. That and an opportunity to boost the ego through megalomaniacal sprouting of bees from the palm of the hand. And "*shock" is right, apart from these themes the entire game's artistic premise is to simply shock and appal the user in various ways. I sat and watched somebody crawl through rapture three times (never played personal), and it was decent enough, but if the sequel isn't going to take place in an underwater city of some kind, I think it's kind of stupid.

You are just a troll. This is a "news for nerds" site, and seeing as how the nerd demographic and gamer demographics are pretty much identical, i'd say this applies. All /. is is a news aggregate site that has the gimmick of social commentary via the users. As a result, the big draw is said social commentary (excluding frosty piss and such). I regularly read these articles a couple days before hand on google news and such, but does that mean I don't come here? As for your last couple of sentences, I sure hope you go straight to the various industry sources, because I'm sure that people who give a crap wouldn't have been able to find news without the internet and newspapers and such.

I've finished Bioshock a few days ago and it is a good game. The characters, the voices, the audio diaries and the environments were compelling. When you find a diary, you want to listen to it and find out what happened.
You walk into a room wondering what happened there and you *want* to know! The game is scary too. The game made me jump. Some scenes and areas are priceless. My only problem with the game was the research camera which was a little pointless way to increase damage.
Would you kindly fetch me a sequel?

I'm in the crowd where I see a sequel not necessary and having one is a stupid cash in on the franchise. With them adding multiplayer, I think it is just as silly because the first game was a super solid single player experience that did not need the mode. This reminds me of Metroid Prime 2 where a tacked on multiplayer mode seems very daft.
Unless they do it as "multiplayer co-op" I think this game should remain single player. If I want to frag other people and listen to high pitched teenies scream profanity in my ear I'll go play Halo. Although shooting swarms of bees at people wouldn't entirely be without value...
