How Do IT Guys Get Respect and Not Become BOFHs?
An anonymous reader writes "I work for a small software company (around 60 people) as the sole IT guy. It's my first time in a position like this and after about 1.5 years I'm starting to get a bit burned out. I try to be friendly, helpful, and responsive and I get no respect whatsoever. Users tend to be flat-out rude when they have a problem, violate our pretty liberal policies constantly, and expect complex projects to be finished immediately upon requesting them. My knee-jerk reaction is to be a bastard, although I've avoided it up to this point. It's getting harder. For those of you who have been doing this a lot longer, how do you get a reasonable level of respect from your users while not being a jerk?"
suck it bitches
1) MS Project? NEVER! WTF!11!1!!!1!1111
Use Bugzilla and provide regular reporting to your supervisor
Items are done with profit in mind first; that's how business rolls!
2) Prioritizing is only viable if in your own interest or if the boss otherwise will kick your ass.
3) All your base belongs to you. Only hand out status information that makes you look perfect.
4) Pick the project you like more and delegate or dump the uninteresting work.
5) Make yourself look good. Dont care for your bosses reputation, they are adult and would not give a shit about you anytime.
6) Make the bimbos hang their tits in your face and let them bring you food and liquor. That jobs has to be fun, or otherwise you could kill yourself.
Never share your success with other departments. Its a war after all.
