The Birth and Battle of Conficker

NewScientist has an interesting look back at the birth of the Conficker worm and how this sophisticated monster quickly grew to such power and infamy. "Since that flurry of activity in early April, all has been uneasily quiet on the Conficker front. In some senses, that marks a victory for the criminals. The zombie network is now established and being used for its intended purpose: to make money. Through its peer-to-peer capabilities, the worm can be updated on the infected network at any time. It is not an unprecedented situation. There are several other large networks of machines infected with malicious software. Conficker has simply joined the list. The security community will continue to fight them, but as long as the worm remains embedded in any computer there can be no quick fixes."

Guess the trick is to find a way to make them want to disinfect their computers.

Yeah, pull the plug on the offending computers from the ISP side and demand they clean up their machines. Oh, you're going to change ISPs? Then next ISP will do the same thing because it will be the law.

Why do people still fucking use Windows machines? They're a danger to everyone. They cost everyone dearly with elaborate defenses that don't work and exploits that fill my mailbox with spam. And don't give me this "well, if the marketshare of Linux or Macs was the same..." bullshit or "well, Vista is more secure than.." nonsense. "Oh, you can hack a Linux machine or a Mac in two seconds..." Yeah, so why isn't it happening? Windows, past, present and future is an active menace to the entire country. Start strengthening the Government by ripping out all the Windows machines. It's irresponsible to have them.

There's your solution, so just clobber it. Got bot traffic? You're disconnected. Don't try to defend it. Pull your Ballmer sucking faces out of the sand and FIX IT!

A computer consultant advocating Windows is like a doctor prescribing cigarettes. It creates a lot of extra work.
