Memory Usage of Chrome, Firefox 3.5, et al.
An anonymous reader writes "This experiment graphs the memory usage of Chrome and Firefox 3.5 (along with Safari and Opera) over a series of 150 Web page loads using an automated script. Firefox 3.5 shows the lowest memory usage in all categories, including average memory usage, maximum memory usage, and final memory usage. Chrome uses over 1 GB of memory due to its process architecture. Safari 4 and Opera show memory usage degradation over time, while Chrome and Firefox 3.5 are more reliable in freeing memory to the OS." IE 8 was not included "because the author could not find a way to prevent it from opening a new window on each invocation of the command."

Why? Do you really do 'which sudo' before running it and entering your password. Sha1 your .profile each time your open a new terminal? Check your .desktop files to see if the system administration menu items actually run those programs?

Certain Slashdotters like palegray and eldavojohn are automatically modded to +5 (and their critics are thus modded down) regardless of content because of their toadiness and/or credentials. Palegray seems to be a cool guy, if not a bit sterile, but having to follow orders does that to people. eldavojohn just sucks the editors' dicks and hides behind momma taco's leg.
That being said, Microsoft operating systems always run Microsoft software faster and snappier than competitors' software, though palegray's potshot was much appreciated.
Heh.
I have a Panasonic CF-30 with 4Gb of RAM installed that runs Gentoo Linux (2.6.29-tuxonice-r3 at the time of this writing).
I don't notice any FFox slowdowns until I hit ~300 tabs. At ~500, I get a fair amount delayed input.
If you're not a web developer, don't comment on something involving web development stuff.
I *am* a web developer, with several years experience building business websites (which must run seamlessly in virtually any browser), I can tell you that FireFox is one of the most buggy browsers out there.
Not as bad as IE, but it's still very bad.
Lol the cripple has trouble with the mouse. I tell you what extension you need. The gas chamber with the rest of the undesirables. I can only hope you pass away soon so the rest of society doesn't have to constantly waste their tax payer money supporting your pathetic cripple ass.
Eating ram and processor is not a FUCKING FEATURE!!!!!
I am so fucking sick of the "firefox does not use memory" bullshit. WHAT FUCKING BROWSER ARE THEY RUNNING???
Over two dozen OS on different systems, including at least a dozen linux distros run on the same systems, ranging from 0 ram to 6 gigs in ram (duel cores, single cores, no cores), firefox still consistently creates a fucking black hole in the universe every time it starts. I am talking about every single version that has been released.
Yet, I just loaded seamonkey with the same rendering engine under it and it did not suck up everything like a fucking 747 engine starting.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH FIREFOX?? Are the developers brain damaged?
Does anyone here remember what the goal of Phoenix was back before it was Firefox? It was intended to be a small fast IE killer.

IE 8 was not included "because the author could not find a way to prevent it from opening a new window on each invocation of the command."
Really? So the "Open links from other programs in" and then choosing either a new tab in the same window or the same tab doesn't exist then? Oh that's right, it does - right under Tools, Internet Options, Tabs.
So either the author is fucking useless or he's lying as he knows the result shows IE winning.
