UK School Forbids Parents From Taking Pics of Kids

tonywong writes "Mrs Ethelston's Church of England Primary School, in Uplyme, Devon, prohibited parents photographing their own children during a school event, claiming it was due to changes in child protection and images legislation. This may be harsh but not as bizarre as another UK school attempting to cover up photos of all the students with smiley faces last year. Perhaps the UK has more bogeymen per square kilometer (kilometre if you're a non USian) than the rest of the world, or is the UK on the leading edge of things-to-come?"

    FYI: To us USians, it's neither square kilometer nor square kilometre. It's square mile.

      FYI: To us Brits, it's a square mile too. I've yet to meet any native Brit that uses metric measurements on a regular basis; you'll find that most of us are pretty damn imperial.

      Correct... it's the Republic of Ireland thats uses the metric system!

      I think it was Bob and Doug McKenzie that were talking about how to do conversions, something like double it and add 32 will get you close.

      so 0C degrees would mean 32F. Following the same logic, the metric 6 pack would mean 42 beers. a metric pound of bacon would be 34 pounds.

      The metric system isn't ALL bad...

    UK Schools now routinely use the "Data Protection Act" or "Privacy Concerns" to prevent parents taking photos of their children at school plays, sports days, assemblies, award ceremonies, etc. Actually, the "Data Protection Act" doesn't have anything to do with this. The schools are petrified that one pervert might come into their school and take photos of kids and upload them to some sicko website (Myspace, Facebook, Bebo???) and get the school a whole load of bad publicity. When I was recently "told off" by my daughter's Karate instructor for taking photos just before a grading (she got a green belt), I did feel like saying "Where exactly in the Data Protection Act does it say I can't take pictures of my children?". Of course I didn't, I wanted my child to be able to take part. However I was denied the opportunity to have any photographic record of her achievements. There is also the fact that many schools make money out of videoing these events and selling the DVD's. The schools are just protecting a revenue stream. There's nothing to stop the perverts buying the DVD and having a jolly good hand shandy over it. Where's the "Data Protection Act" now?!!

    Clearly, what's required is some form of child sized burka which all children would be required to wear. School yards would be filled with hundreds of cute little jawas.

      No, that would never work, you'd need to give them photo IDs, otherwise, you'd never filter for pedophile midgets.

    Parent poster will never work for NASA or any other firm or agency that uses some actual scientific measurements, instead of archaic colonial measurements*.
