Microsoft Discloses Windows 7 Pricing

It's the tripnaut! writes "Information Week has posted prices for Windows 7. From the article: 'The full version of Windows 7 Home Premium is priced at $199, with an upgrade from Vista or XP costing $119. The full version of Windows 7 Professional is $299, with upgrades going for $199. Windows 7 Ultimate is priced at $319, with the upgrade version at $219.' In a nod to the global economic downturn, it is interesting to note that prices are 10% lower than Vista."

$319 United States dollars for the opportunity to have my computer assimilated by a botnet? I think I'll stick with Ubuntu for free. I've also just realized that Windows Vista is much more difficult to administer than Linux has become so if you want simple and easy to manage, it's now Linux not Windows.

If you think by using windows in any form will get you 'assimilated by a botnet' by default, then are you sure you can administer any OS that well? Once again, users of any minority OS will see less attacks, simply because they don't have the market share. Simple as that really.

I still think it's a bit convenient that M$ takes 6+ years to develop something as awful as Vista, then spends less than 3 developing something remarkably usable, innovative and stable (at least compared to its predecessor.) I just thank Canonical, FOSS coders everywhere, and the good man upstairs for (K/U)buntu!

But when you want to upgrade your iMac, you have to pay for a new screen to replace the perfectly good one with the old computer. And if you want multiple machines on a KVM, you're screwed. For me, the Mini is underpowered, the PowerMac is over priced, and I will not buy a computer with an integrated screen. The day they release something comparable to an iMac but without an integrated screen and a price that reflects the missing screen is the day I switch to mac.

So let's see... Windows 7 has:

    1. Performance enhancements of various kinds.

    2. XP mode

    3. A new, fancy taskbar

    4. A more powerful calculator and similarly tiny changes to apps.

    10.6 has:

    1. Performance enhancements of various kinds, including a massive reduction in size.

    2. A new avenue of development with OpenCL.

    3. Changes comparable to a more powerful calculator.

So it looks like Windows 7 has... a new, fancy taskbar and a compatibility layer compared to 10.6. WOW, that sure justifies a $200 price difference. The grandparent will be eating his shorts, but at least he'll be able to buy about 15 more pairs.

The internet is what you use to communicate. You said you needed windows to communicate, it's just untrue that you need windows to communicat.

No, I said I needed to talk to hardware in the real world. Don't tell me what I use to "communicate" with the real world, because it is obvious that you are so stuck in "the internet is the world" mode that you wouldn't know what an EEPROM burner is if it bit you in the ass. Or an A/D converter.

Actually my real world isn't even on a computer, and my work world involves mostly spreadsheets and databases.

Yes, it's obvious you use computers for nothing but software, and have no clue what it takes to have a computer do useful work controlling real-world applications. For you, it doesn't matter what the OS is because someone IS writing all your applications for you and you don't need any drivers but the run-of-the-mill. How nice for you.

Your communications skills (both input and output) seem to be quite lacking.

    Yeah, whatever.
