GM Gets To Dump Its Polluted Sites

ParticleGirl writes with this excerpt from the Detroit Free Press: "GM's unusual, government-engineered bankruptcy allowed the Detroit automaker to emerge as a new company — and to shed billions in liabilities, including claims that governments had against GM for polluting. Environmental liabilities estimated at $530 million were left with the old GM, which has only $1.2 billion to wind down. Administrative fees and other claims will soak up that money, and state and local officials told the Free Press they fear the cleanups will be shortchanged. ... The New York Attorney General's Office, seeking to protect environmental claims for cleanup at Massena and other sites, argued that federal and state regulatory requirements should not be eliminated by a bankruptcy sale. ... But [US Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber] ruled otherwise."

Please learn the differences among "their" and "there" and "they're" before you decide you're going to tell us a thing or two. It's your native fucking language so quit being so silly.

Another thing that is trendy is trying to use "loose" as a verb because you don't understand the difference between "lose" and "loose". It's trendy because you never saw that anywhere and suddenly tons of people start making this one mistake like the little clockwork sheep that they are. It's just another good way to scream HEY I AM EITHER CARELESS OR STUPID SO PLEASE DISREGARD MY MESSAGE! Functionally illiterate bastards, all of you.

U.S. Presidents are routinely called by their full name, or at least their first & last plus initials

George W Bush (an initial, but still)
      Dwight D Eisenhower (another initial)
      George Herbert Walker Bush
      William Jefferson Clinton
      Richard Milhouse Nixon

It's neither common nor uncommon to call presidents by their full name. I think you're just being sensitive, really.

that's not true. the leglislative branch can dole out money for anything it likes. It can't make laws that give it sweeping new powers, but it does have power of the pursestrings, so if it gives you money it certainly has the right to tell you to give it back and under what conditions.

No it can not. It is bound by restrictions in the constitution and the only thing that gives the government power is the constitution. You need to retake your government and civics class.

If they don't take any money from you, THEN the us gov has no power to garnish wages or the like, except perhaps if a previous arrangement had been broken and that was a term of that arrangement (I don't know what the pollution cleanup agreement was, but knowing about the superfund I imagine that the feds gave GM some money to help with it).

What the fuck are you talking about? They can tax you, it's specifically allowed int he constitution. What they can't do is tax you more then anyone else because of some hidden agenda or past action that was legal. They also cannot create a post facto law which would punish actions that were legal when it happened.

man, every time you turn around these days you hear about constitutional stuff totally misapplied. funny no one really cared when real consitutional issues like honoring treaties, habeas corpus or domestic spying were the norm. Now that it's not even a constitutional question it's all over the place. Funny stuff.

First of all, the domestic spying was not a constitutional issue. It was a legal issue. Second of all, what fucking rock have you been hiding under? All of those receive outcry with court cases challenging the habeas corpus. It seems that misapplied isn't the word your looking for, it would be selectively applied and your comment is a great insight into your own thinking.

So I don't understand any childish name calling. Just stating the full name of the President. Sure, lots of people would like to pretend that isn't his middle name. Sorry, but it is true.

  7. Afro-American Racism Against Whites and Asians by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll
During the election, about 95% of African-Americans voted for Barack Hussein Obama due solely to the color of his skin. See the exit-polling data by CNN.

Note the voting pattern of Hispanics, Asian-Americans, etc. These non-Black minorities serve as a measurement of African-American racism against Whites (and other non-Black folks). Neither Barack Hussein Obama nor John McCain is Hispanic or Asian. So, Hispanics and Asian-Americans used only non-racial criteria in selecting a candidate and, hence, serve as the reference by which we detect a racist voting pattern. Only about 65% of Hispanics and Asian-Americans supported Obama. In other words, a maximum of 65% support by any ethnic or racial group for either McCain or Obama is not racist and, hence, is acceptable. (A maximum of 65% for McCain is okay. So, European-American support at 55% for McCain is well below this threshold and, hence, is not racist.)

If African-Americans were not racist, then at most 65% of them would have supported Obama. At that level of support, McCain would have won the presidential race.

At this point, African-American supremacists (and apologists) claim that African-Americans voted for Obama because he (1) is a member of the Democratic party and (2) supports its ideals. That claim is an outright lie. Look at the exit-polling data for the Democratic primaries. Consider the case of North Carolina. Again, about 95% of African-Americans voted for him and against Hillary Clinton. Both Clinton and Obama are Democrats, and their official political positions on the campaign trail were nearly identical. Yet, 95% of African-Americans voted for Obama and against Hillary Clinton. Why? African-Americans supported Obama due solely to the color of his skin.

Here is the bottom line. Barack Hussein Obama does not represent mainstream America. He won the election due to the racist voting pattern exhibited by African-Americans.

African-Americans have established that expressing "racial pride" by voting on the basis of skin color is 100% acceptable. Neither the "Wall Street Journal" nor the "New York Times" complained about this racist behavior. Therefore, in future elections, please feel free to express your racial pride by voting on the basis of skin color. Feel free to vote for the non-Black candidates and against the Black candidates if you are not African-American. You need not defend your actions in any way. Voting on the basis of skin color is very acceptable by today's moral standard.

GM and Chrysler should have been left to die. Period. They're businesses sucked and so did they're products.

It would be fine to say that they sucked compared to foreign competitors but the free trade deals the USA has stupidly put together were a one way street. The fact of the matter is that GM and Chrysler and Ford have been hip deep into the government's pocket for the last fifty years and have taken every stupid idea the government has put forth on the chin. It's not a surprise that GM went belly up. What's a surprise is that more companies did not go belly up. Of course, when we look at the US manufacturing sector, just about every company did.

Nope. Let's see, we pile on legislation to make our products more expensive, sign stupid trade deals with insincere trading partners for the sole purpose of expanding military power into the Pacific so that we can defend these assholes from each other, and what do they do? They screw us by jacking up our currency.

My plan is simple. Kick the Koreans out. Kick the Japanese out. Kick the Chinese out. Withdraw US troops from South Korea and Japan, and let the asian countries do what they will. The only country in the Pacific that the USA should defend or accept imports from is Australia and the rest can go to hell.
