Does Your College Or University Support Linux?
yuna49 writes 'Lately I've been visiting colleges with my daughter, who is a senior in high school. Every school has proudly announced that they support both Windows and Macs, and most of these schools report having about a 50-50 split between the two. However we've been a Linux household for many years now, and my daughter routinely uses a laptop running Kubuntu 9.04. Sometimes I would ask the student tour guide if Linux was supported and was usually met with a blank stare. We're obviously not concerned about whether she can write papers using OpenOffice and Linux. Rather we've been wondering about using other computing services on campus like classroom applications, remote printing, VPNs, or Wi-Fi support (nearly all these campuses have ubiquitous Wi-Fi). Given the composition of Slashdot's readership, I thought I'd pose the question here. Does your school support Linux? Have you found it difficult or impossible to use Linux in concert with the school's computing services?'
Or.... you can grow up and quit thinking that picking an OS is the same kind of life-altering decision that picking a religion is. For fuck's sake, it's only Windows, it's a popular computer operating system, which operates computers and has its own range of drawbacks and benefits. The minute you start changing your entire life because someone won't support Linux is the point at which you should take a very good look in the mirror and decide if the fat, greasy visage peering myopically back at you is *really* where you wanted to be at this point in your life. And if the answer is "Yes" then keep looking in the mirror until the answer is "No".
Repeat this each morning when you wake up:
It's. Only. A. Computer.
And. It's. Only. An. Operating. System.
To me, this isn't even about "free" in the sense of ideology, but it's about making education "cheap" as in $$$.
So then you either download it for free from the university or pay 5 or 10 bucks for it on a CD. Seriously, nothing but a podunk university wouldn't be able to offer this.
They're supposed to milk rich mommies and daddies who send their kids off to join frats, get drunk, and go to football games.
Aww, did some poor little baby not have a social life and was jealous of all the people who did? No wonder your such a loser zealot.
Oh my, looks like a navigation error in the GNUidance system again. You probably didn't even know it happened. This is Earth. Your GNU/Rocket missed Planet Stallman altogether. But don't worry. You just tweak the source code, recompile, and you'll be back on your way in no time.
