Not Enough Women In Computing, Or Too Many Men?
itwbennett writes "Do geeks really 'drive girls out of computer science,' as the headline of a LiveScience article contends? Blogger Cameron Laird doesn't think so. In fact, 'I don't think "gender issues in computing" is important enough to merit the attention it gets,' says Laird in a recent post. And maybe the problem isn't that there are too few women in computing, but that there are too many men. 'I'm waiting to read the headline: "Women too smart for careers with computers,"' says Laird, 'where another researcher concludes that only "boys" are stupid enough to go into a field that's globally-fungible, where entry-level salaries are declining, and it's common to think that staying up all night for a company-paid pizza is a good deal.'"
Since when is a tilde a negation? Isn't it supposed to be an exclamation point?
I've got better things to do than tilde at windmills.
Do not mock my vision of impractical footwear
What's that? You want equality of results too? Well that's just plain fucking Obamariffic!
Fixed!
(made you waste a mod point!)
Yep, this one sounds like it might be even as tame as your average climategate discussion.
Speaking of rational discussions I haven't seen a good comparison of databases recently. I am building a database application. Which server should I use? MySQL, Oracle, Firebird. or Postgres?
Hear hear!!!
My story is not nearly as harsh as yours however similar vein. Parents separated, mother addicted to prescription painkillers, father had heart attack. Packed shelves in the supermarket in the graveyard shift (10pm - 4am) and used part of the money to pay for basic IT training. Would study every night and eventually landed an evening / night shift internet support job. From there moved onto, you guessed it, another night shift tech support job. Kept the study going and started doing websites in whatever spare time I had. Finally got a break into dev and haven't looked back (always get fantastic references 'cause I work my guts out and always deliver) - now make good money and have a great life. Did I "benefit" from my personal circumstances? Yes - but more because it made me harden the f' up and not expect life to hand me things on a platter rather than being given an easy path because I am male.
I laugh at these people who "expect" a job and promotions for no apparent reason than they believe they are somehow special. Welcome to the real world "dudes" (had to use that :) ) - it isn't fair. I would much rather life had been much simpler but to be honest having to fight for everything has made me a much stronger person. It is so funny to see people expect to be given special consideration in a career just because they are a woman (or whatever else). Here's a hint: just because someone is a man doesn't mean that it was easy for them to get where they are. I know a girl who currently can't get a job. Always blames it on discrimination. In reality her problem is that her interview technique and people skills are just terrible. People always love blaming everything but themselves for their problems. Life isn't easy. Deal with it.
