Patrolling the US Border Via Webcam

The BBC features a story today on a controversial effort to patrol the border between Mexico and Texas by means of 21 hidden cameras, the output of which is streamed online for viewers at home, who can then report suspected illegal border crossings; more than 130,000 people have registered to observe the streams, from as far afield as "Australia, Mexico, Colombia, Israel, New Zealand and the UK."

Why are Americans so goddamned fat? Really, just a generation or two ago this wasn't the deal. Overnight America became a land of big bovine fatasses, ruminating their fast food while they walk, shifting their bulk with that awkward sideways waddle because they long ago lost the ability to smoothly put one foot in front of the other.

Here's the part I REALLY don't understand. You hit say, 190 lbs on the scales. Bit of a gain. Then you hit 200. Then 210. Gee, do we see a trend or a pattern here? You could take action now, catch it before it gets so bad, but no, you just keep doing the same thing, day in and day out, now it's 220, 250, 300 pounds or more, and still you keep eating the same amount of food and the same kind of food without exercising more. Hmm, wonder why you can't lose the weight? Oh yeah, cuz of your genetics right? Amazing how the genetics of an entire population can change within 20 years, even though most of those folks are older than 20. Anything excuse, no matter how unplausible, will do if it shirks personal responsibility, eh?

Look, if you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight, that's just physics. It's not physically possible to burn more calories than you eat and keep gaining weight. This isn't hard to understand. Any idiot can figure that out. So why do I visit America and see all of these fatasses everywhere? The effort they spend lobbying for "fat acceptance" and shopping for plus-size clothing is more than the effort it would take to lose the weight. And always they have millions of excuses, nothing is ever their responsibility, they will tell you anything and everything except "I refuse to do what is necessary to take control of this situation". Heart disease seems to be Nature's way of weeding out the unfit, but Nature might be disappointed because they usually reproduce before they die of heart attacks.

One more thing. Why the hell aren't parents of fat children locked up for child abuse? They are failing to provide for the health of their children. They are predisposing them to all kinds of diseases like diabetes and to all kinds of psychological issues. If we can take children away for things like emotional or verbal abuse, why don't we do it in this case?

Why do you suppose personal responsibility changed radically in 20 years if you don't believe genetics did? In reality the culprit is obvious, the conversion of the food supply to corn syrup over the precise 20 years in which this happened. Duh.

You don't need to be Sigmund Freud to work out that something is very rotten in the national psyche of America. Like Germany from the latter part of the C19 on, it is a country with a dysfunctional personality or character. Only WWI and the inevitable WWII addressed Germany's tendency towards Fascism.

The rank culture, the arrogance, the loathsome corpulence, the fascination with guns, the murderous venal wars, the addiction to oil, the rampant capitalism : they all point to a country that is not very happy with itself at all.

Its neighbors may crave the wealth that the greediest people on earth have accumulated - and try their utmost to leave the economic disaster zones that the US probably contributed toward creating (certainly true in the case of Mexico,) but no one would seriously want to attach themselves to such a disgusting national character without the financial payoff for them and their family.
