Linux Foundation Announces 2010 "We're Linux" Video Contest

prourl writes "The Linux Foundation (LF), the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced the 2010 'We're Linux' video contest. The contest seeks to find the best user-generated videos that demonstrate what Linux means to those who use it and inspire others to try it." Sadly, the winner will almost certainly be edited in Final Cut Pro on a Mac ;)

No multi-monitor support. Kernel updates that break drivers. Poor if any documentation. A "community" that trips over itself to insult you when you "dare" ask for help. Yep, we're linux!

Who cares? Most people don't want a bezel in the middle of their desktop. It's just not something they would be into.

So this whole idea that "multi monitor is a killer" is just PC gamer wannabe nonsense.

Thank you all for proving my point. Of course it's nonsense that I make a couple thousand bucks a day, but I need at least 6 monitors to do it. Of course there's no "need" for this, I just want my desktop to "look cool". Of course anyone who needs more than ZOMG 2 monitors is doing nothing but wasting time playing games. And of course I get modded flamebait for bringing up a valid point. That's ok linux people. You may continue with your heads in the sands of ignorance. I can afford the Windows license anyway.

Surprisingly, I use linux for games...

The problem is that unless you know what you're doing, Linux can be a pain in the ass, and your response is typical, and indicative of why Linux will never be mainstream as it currently sits. I constantly see responses that are intimidating to the novice user. On of my favorites is, "read the man page". Like that's really going to help someone who doesn't know what they are doing. The fact is that Windows almost always just works, and installing drivers and software almost always works and you don't usually have to know what you're doing to make it work. On Linux (which I use on a daily basis, BTW) installing drivers and software generally works but you frequently have to know what you're doing, and / or do a fair amount of googling to get things working properly.

DogDude may not know what he is doing. That's no excuse for the OS to be difficult to install and configure properly. As long as the level of required technical knowledge remains significantly higher for Linux than Windows or Mac OS, it will never become mainstream. It's kind of like most people not knowing how to work on their car. You shouldn't need to know how to install a fuel pump to drive a car; knowing how to put in gas, check the oil, and the air pressure should be a sufficient level of knowledge.

No kidding. All you have to do is open up a terminal window and enter these twelve 12 cryptic commands. If you would have taken the time to read all the man pages and then post on the Ubuntu forums and then go out and buy linux friendly hardware, you'd realize just how easy it really is, moron.

The Linux Foundation also did this in 2009. Here are last year's winners.

In March 2009 Win 7 had a global market share of 0%.

    Linux 1%.

It is reasonably safe to predict that in March 2010, Win 7 will break through 10%. Barring a miracle, Linux will remain at 1%. Top Operating System Share Trends

The W3Schools stats are kinder to Linux - but the trend lines are just as flat.

Apple sells an upscale urban lifestyle. Microsoft solid middle class values. This is not the geek's definition of freedom. But it strikes a chord with others.

The geek remembers "1984." But IBM did very well with Charlie Chaplin.

The FOSS application is routinely ported to Windows or begins as a native Windows app. That takes the wind out of your sails when you talk to the user about "freedom."
