Making music has never been quite this awesome! Using only ThinkGeek products (Bliptronic 5000, Guitar Shirt, Drumkit Shirt, Stylophone, and Otamatone Electronic Instrument) the ultra-geeks over at ThinkGeek have created this ultra-cool cover of The Who's Baba O'Reilly. This also qualifies as a full blown shameless plug since ThinkGeek shares a corporate overlord with Slashdot.

      Yeah well another man is an idiot.

      "Conflict of interest" is when you're a Judge, with a duty to administer impartial justice, but you have a material or personal investment in seeing a particular outcome. Or any similar case where official and personal interests conflict. That's what it means.

      Slashdot's official interest is to make money for itself and its parent company. Slashdot is not a civil servant. Whatever duty to impartiality you imagine Slashdot has is simply that -- your imagination. But in reality, Slashdot has never been impartial, and barely ever tried to appear as such.

      In short, shameless plugs are not a conflict of interest, they are entirely within Slashdot's interests. At least they are upfront about it.

      Conflicts of interests apply more broadly than just your area of interest. Wikipedia defines it as, "A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation for an act in the other."

      Slashdot reports news. Thinkgeek sells products. Using a news site to generate sales at a site they also own is a conflict of interest. It raises questions as to their biases and how much their financial interests are skewing their reporting of news. Is it illegal? No. But it does in fact meet the definition of conflict of interest.

      Only according to baggage you are bringing with the phrase "reports news", like Slashdot is an analogue of NPR or CNN. It isn't. It's a link aggregator, that sometimes links news, sometimes links products, and sometimes just nerdy stuff. Slashdot has never been impartial and unbiased by self-interest, nor pretended to be. So how can a lack of impartiality be a corruption of their motivation, when it was never presumed to be part of their motivation in the first place?

      Slashdot linking to stuff that brings them revenue is in no way a corruption. The only thing it may have corrupted is your imagined ideal of Slashdot. Which is only for the better.

      The tagline says, "News for Nerds." If it said, "Link Aggregator for Nerds," you might have an argument. But it doesn't. Slashdot claims it is a news site. CNN and NPR also link to or report random non-news stuff too, and when they report on entities their corporate overlord also owns, it's a conflict of interest.

      So because it has the word "News" in the pithy tagline, Slashdot has the same obligations to provide unbiased news as a public good as organizations granted broadcast licenses by the FCC?

      If what something is called changed what something is, then you'd have a point. But as anyone can see, Slashdot is not a news site, it's a site that links to news and other things elsewhere based on extremely biased criterion and with no pretense of neutral coverage. So it doesn't really matter that to you the word "News" appearing as a descriptor on the website means it is necessarily news source akin to NPR, and that "reports news" necessarily implies an obligation to report unbiased news. It's a semantic argument at best, and semantics aren't reality.

      It's not a conflict of interest when it only goes against what you imagine the site's interests should be.

      Pithy tagline or no, it's the word they chose to describe their site. News is an incredibly broad word, covering publicly funded radio stations, cable news networks, and local newspapers who simply repost articles from AP (which is their equivalent of slashdot linking to an article). Providing original research or commentary is not necessary to make it an "official" news site, or whatever your point was.

      But as anyone can see, Slashdot is not a news site,

      Which is why I have to make exasperating explanations to all my meatspace friends that slashdot merely links to articles, etc. It is NOT immediately apparent to non-slashdaughters that it is not a news site like CNN or Fox News. Everyone I know that has seen it has thought it was a real news site that did real original reporting the first time they saw it.

      I must be missing something, but I too have turned the Idle section off (or so I thought) where only a small title is shown, not the full article, but this crap still gets through it. What did you enable to filter this out accordingly? Perhaps I am unable to see the options you mention since I am using "Classic" Mode?

      In any case, I am getting quite sick of idle stories continuously showing up on my front page. The quality of this site has been trending down in the last year and this is no small reason (i.e. idle stories being tagged as news).

      It does; there should be a "minus" sign next to the title that you can click on to "demote" the story. You can then tag it appropriately (binspam, dupe, notthebest, stale, stupid, slownesday, offtopic).

    A fan of Baba O'Riley already, I enjoyed it. As far as Slashvertisements go, this one was at least entertaining.

    Can't tell if they were syncing to the already recorded music, but it looks like they recorded the the instruments separately and edited the multitrack recording into the final audio track. They did do a bit of work, and it did make the toy instruments come off better than I would have expected.
