Confessions of a SysAdmin

Mr.Fork writes "Scott Merrill from CrunchGear has a confession. He really, really hates computers. He writes: 'No, really, I hate them. I love the communications they facilitate, I love the conveniences they provide to my life, and I love the escapism they sometimes afford; but I actually hate the computers themselves. Computers are fragile, unintuitive things — a hodge-podge of brittle hardware and opaque, restrictive software.' Does his editorial speak to all of us in similar IT-related fields? Do we all silently hate the complexities and idiosyncrasies computers have, like error messages and UI designs that make no sense to the common user, which make our tech professions miserable?"

Absolutely agreed. I just came out of an Apple store in Braintree, MA a few minutes ago and I have only one word to say after having touched an iPad for the first time. WOW. This is what computing should be. All the crap about Flash, webcam, app store, blah blah blah is pure irrelevant bs. This is the slickest most intuitive and pleasant computer I ahave ever had the joy of using. Seriously, anybody who hasn't used one of these things, stop what you are doing right now and go do so. This is the future of computing.

Now, having said that, no, I will not be getting one. Why? I'm a geek. I'm typing this on my Ubuntu desktop and I have a modded G1 in my pocket. My router, nokia 770, media computer, netbook and all of my desktops run Linux. I am a true believer in open source software and nothing less will do. However, for the other 99 percent of the population, just get the damn iPad.

Oh, and as for the Windows 7 slates... BWAHAHAHAHA...LOL. Please, if you can't make it for half of the price of the cheapest iPad, don't even bother. You are playing out of your league this time, Ballmer.
