iPad Isn't "Killing" Netbook Sales, According To Paul Thurrott
mantis2009 writes "Paul Thurrott, the prolific technology analyst and Windows expert, reacts strongly to an article highlighted on Slashdot. Thurrott takes numbers from IDC and the Wall Street Journal, indicating that netbook sales have not in any meaningful way been affected by sales of Apple's tablet computer, the iPad. Money quote: '[N]etbooks and sub-12-inch machines will sell 45.6 million units in 2011 and 60.3 million in 2013. If I remember the numbers from 2009, they were 10 percent of all PCs, or about 30 million units. Explain again how the iPad will beat that. Please. Even the craziest iPad sales predictions are a small percentage of that.'"
Lmao what an idiot. Gaming on an iPad? Sure, I guess if you want to play a turn based version of Pong. You can make netbooks touch by spending a few bucks and installing a touch screen (which if your too stupid to do you can no doubt find someone to do it for $20).
iPad is a fucking joke. If it was more realistic, it would be great.
Well, Paul Thurrott is kind of an idiot. Anyone who can be a chearleader for M$ after having used an Amiga has got to have at least a few fasteners torqued well below specification. The iPad is not a netbook first of all and shouldn't be compared to one. He's just whining because this is a formfactor that M$ has been working on for years with nothing to show for it. Once again Apple shows that they know how to design a cool new device.
...except the iPad doesn't have a real keyboard, has crap multimedia format support and a crap web browser with no plugin or extension support.
It's like using a 1994 Linux machine with a membrane keyboard.
A Pirate and a Puritan look the same on a balance sheet.
so, you wanna get jobs' cock in your mouth one more time and try that again?
anyone thick enough to buy this piece of shit needs to made aware of what it is they're getting into - an attempt to fuck over everything that is great about computing and the internet.
vermin you are, and you're gonna get called out. count on it. things have changed a bit.
Don't worry. Those millions of netbooks sold with Windows - which ruined the netbook market - will be available soon on Ebay at incredible discount rates. And they run Linux great, just like they always did. As a bonus, the flash storage they use is much cheaper and has much more capacity than when they were first offerred.
Help stamp out iliturcy.
You do realize that almost everything on your list is compete and utter trolling, right? An iPad can basically do almost everything on your list. It's not at all hard to come up with things that an iPad can't do, yet still you proceeded to dump a huge list of things that it can! Strawman argument, perhaps?
That's easy. Buy the iPad Camera Connector Kit and use a real camera. Oh, you meant a built-in camera on the Netbook? Those are universally crap anyway.... :-)
This is, of course, coming soon.
Sure it can. You just need a $99 iPhone developer program membership. Or jailbreak it. Either way.
Again, easy. Buy the iPad Camera Connector Kit. It supports memory sticks as long as they are capable of working correctly on low-power USB. In other words, if you can plug them into your keyboard, they should work. If they only work when you plug them into a computer, they won't.
Apparently you haven't heard of the iPad Camera Connector Kit? Because that's exactly what it's for....
I'm pretty sure you can connect any standard USB keyboard using the iPad Camera Connector Kit. At least that's what a number of folks have discovered.
Also, there's always the iPad Keyboard Dock that provides a standard laptop-sized keyboard (no keypad)
Again, I'm not sure it's officially supported, but the iPad Camera Connector Kit does this as long as you're connecting a standard HID-class-compliant keyboard and mouse. I'm starting to sound like a broken record here.
Actually, yes it can. It can output up to 720p if you buy the iPad VGA adapter. Sure, it's not DVI, but if you wanted that, netbooks cannot, either.
On what netbook!?! I've never seen a netbook with anything more than a single VGA output. If you're going to compare an iPad to a netbook, at least compare it to a netbook that doesn't live in fantasy-land. Oh, you meant outputting something different than what's on your screen? Yup. iPad can. The app has to be coded to do so, but plenty of apps do this.
USB hub. $10 at Fry's. Seriously, you're not trying very hard, are you?
There are, no doubt folks working on that, too.... It's pretty much inevitable.

Okay, so, your solution to using your under-powered over-price feature-less piece of crap is to go out and spend more exorbitant amounts of money? I do believe the netbook market was aimed at a low price-point. Oh no, I'm pretty sure the iPad and netbook demographics are completely different. The people that buy iPads throw their money around with little concern whereas those who go for netbooks want to stick to a better deal and more options. But if you want to drop 60 bucks into a crappy keyboard that only works with one 500 dollar device, that's cool. In the meantime, us folk that enjoy having options and capabilities will continue sticking with standard devices that don't require expensive adapters and Apple's kid-friendly programs playground.
What day is it? Could you please tell me?
So, basically, your response boils down to "you're not me." Thanks for that, it really adds to the conversation.
Some people are stupid and are married to people who will defend their uninsightful judgements.
