A Peace Plan To End the Flash-On-iPhone Fight
GMGruman writes "As the pro- and anti-Flash camps have hardened their positions, the editors at InfoWorld have come up with a four-point peace plan that would allow Flash on the iPhone while addressing Apple's very real concerns over performance, stability, and security. Readers can vote and comment on the peace plan, which InfoWorld hopes will result in serious talks between Apple and Adobe."
I own a iphone and have absolutely no need for flash in any form on my device. Flash would add nothing of value to the platform. I already have nearly a unlimited quantity of applications and games on it what value would it add?
Got Code?
Which codec should we use for HTML5 video? The one that doesn't work in Opera/Firefox or the one that doesn't work in Safari/(future)IE9?
Also, give me Farmville, badgersbadgersbadgers and Chatroulette in HTML and I'll buy what you say. But since you can't, I feel compelled to say you are wrong.

I read about iTunes complaints all the time in online fora and blogs, but I rarely see any specific grievances. I'm not saying it is not true, but I am very curious to know what specifically makes iTunes "suck so bad"? I ask because I use iTunes all the time as my primary music library manager and player, and find it easy to use and very powerful.
It's an honest question, I'm not trying to start a flamewar.

4) Salesmen: really stop selling flash. Be a sport, and sell something more modern.
Flash is usually there because of the salesmen, not because of the web authors.
Nae king! Nae laird! Nae yurrupiean pressedent! We willna be fooled again!
1. Create a Flash video player plug-in
Irrelevant. Within a year 90%+ of online videos will have a HTML5 alternative. Other services that currently use Flash for video will have apps in the App Store as well.
2. Put the core Flash technologies into the standards bodies
I thought the Flash format was open, hence Gnash, etc. Standardise it, fine. It still won't change anything about Apple's stance.
3. Create an iPhone-certified SWF exporter for Creative Suite
Basically you're asking for a new Cocoa Touch component - a "Flash Canvas" but with native code instead of ActionScript. I'm sure that the existing (but now disallowed) Flash->iPhone OS App compiler did this. I don't think Apple will care to implement that in any form though, they want to push their OS, not a cross-platform subset of functionality. They already have a HTML5 Canvas which can be controlled via Javascript. http://www.canvasdemos.com/ has some examples.
4. Explore a Flash app certification process
If the app is worthwhile, it will get ported to Apple's platform anyway. Apple would rather the apps all shared the same UI conventions and used the same underlying UI kit.
In my opinion Adobe should put their effort into leveraging their creative suite tools to generate HTML5 apps, via HTML5 Canvas, Video and so on. If they don't, Apple surely will eventually have such offerings!
The Apple/Adobe fight is about money and control. Apple wants to wall people into their garden and Flash is an impedance to that. Apples banking on their customer loyalty (accept that owning an iPhone/iPad == no Flash) and that HTML5 will replace Flash for video.
How many times has Apple been wrong about X replacing Y? Regardless of their motivation, I tend to believe Apple when they make such predictions.
The US government have made it clear that we have no inalienable rights; any we do not defend vigorously will be taken.
BINGO.
More to the point, its not the wait and the cost, its the fact that if you don;t release an app that takes advantage of a newly available API as soon as is possible (if not on launch day), then you loose market share to all the guys who DID code natively and beat you to the market. While you;re writing your app, they're already writing the updates to improve theirs...
Being a day late means a LOT to app store developers. Worse, if Adobe's code is buggy (or makes buggy code, or releases a compiler update that breaks your existing code), patching your code to accomodate becomes MUCH more difficult.
If Adobe was world renowned for stable, efficient, memory-light, secure code, it might be viable to use something like this, but accepting all of Adobe's faults, being relegated to code that simply will never be able to grasp full hardware performance, constantly being scrutinized by Apple, dealing with security implications, AND being late to market? WTF would anyone want this???
There is no contest in life for which the unprepared have the advantage.
you beat the webdesigners severely for using flash. Because you could have simply given a link to the College's iphone/ipod friendly (moble.college.edu) site and not have to force the user to install an app.
A lot of these "informational" apps are garbage that could have been done better with a simple website.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
Surprisingly, you are required to run OSX to run Apple's development environment, just like you are required to run Windows to run Microsoft's development environments.
the difference? to run OSX i need to fork out the $$$ for apple's premium hardware.
by the way, there are cross compilers for linux-windows and windows-linux. however, to compile OSX you need OSX.
Apple aren't anything; it's a grammatically singular entity. Apple's managers are. Apple's employees are. Apple's competitors are. Apple is.
I don't buy this for a second. Apple's hardware business is extremely profitable, moreso all the time, and the company has been very successful at differentiating itself from the far-less-profitable commodity x86 hardware market. What you write is unsubstantiated fantasy.

True. Being wrong makes them wrong.
The link that you provided supports my assertion that the use of "are" in the case above is incorrect. This is true both in American English, where "are" is always wrong, and in UK English, where it's wrong when describing an action made collectively by an entity rather than by individuals making up that entity.
UK English: Apple are enjoying their holidays this Christmas season. Apple is dominating the market for fruit-themed smartphones.

Good for you. I would have said that since you're apparently a little more flexible and open-minded than your typical trust fund ponce who sits in Starbucks all day posing that the term "appletard" doesn't apply to you.
