What To Do With an Old G5 Tower?
lunatic1969 writes "I've got an old G5 PowerPC tower that's sitting in a spare room not seeing much in the way of use. I'd like to stick a Linux distribution on it and maybe breathe some life back into it. I've got a few vague ideas — it might be a handy file server, streaming video for a security system, or simply just to have a spare box around. My question is therefore in two parts: First, are there any particularly creative projects or ideas anyone has for an old G5, and second and most important, which distribution currently offers the best support for this box?"

I agree with you. I wasn't saying it replaces a file server. Just saying that it certainly has its uses. It's an option, and doesn't make a person a 'cretin' to have that kind of setup. I don't need RAID for this, I don't care about backing it up (I can just rip my movies again, it's not the end of the world). And my other network devices can easily access it when I plug it into one of my other machines.
So, you're completely right. I was only saying that I don't think it makes me a 'cretin' to want to do that, because it suits my needs perfectly. It's an alternative to a file server when a person doesn't need everything that a file server offers.
And boy, I'm glad I posted anon for that. Thanks for modding me -1, fucker (that's to the mod, not you, of course, h4rr4r). I was posting my setup and saying how it works for me. And I get -1? WTF is with that?
