The ~200 Line Linux Kernel Patch That Does Wonders
An anonymous reader writes "There is a relatively miniscule patch to the Linux kernel scheduler being queued up for Linux 2.6.38 that is proving to have dramatic results for those multi-tasking on the desktop. Phoronix is reporting the ~200 line Linux kernel patch that does wonders with before and after videos demonstrating the much-improved responsiveness and interactivity of the Linux desktop. While compiling the Linux kernel with 64 parallel jobs, 1080p video playback was still smooth, windows could be moved fluidly, and there was not nearly as much of a slowdown compared to when this patch was applied. Linus Torvalds has shared his thoughts on this patch: So I think this is firmly one of those 'real improvement' patches. Good job. Group scheduling goes from 'useful for some specific server loads' to 'that's a killer feature.'"
Is there some place that conducts desktop user focus groups, market studies, etc, on how to increase Linux desktop acceptance? Does anyone publish these results. I participated in a few market-study projects, and although I don't really like these techniques for increasing the sales of detergent, I admit they are awfully effective for understanding what the user thinks of and wants. The ideas that guru techs have of user needs are evidently going to be different than the conclusions that direct observation of user comments by usability engineers, psychologists and anthropologists.

Was I the only one thinking about Amigas and Alphastations?
Was I the only one thinking about Natalie Portman?
Damn straight. Going from Vista to 7 was an amazing improvement.
Aw, you've finally learned that capitalization matters! How's your uncle Jack?
Comment of the year
From the godfather of soul hisself
I hear you had a good offer down on Third Avenue
You tell me that was the reason
For whatcha' put me through, Yeah
And now you come collapsin' back
I feel the heat of your attack
Want me to take you back
I'm givin' you the sack
So don't waste your time
It's a Little Too Little
It's a Little Too Late
I'm a Little Too Hurt
And there's nothin' left that I've gotta say
You can cry to me baby
But there's only so much I can take
Ah, it's a Little Too Little
It's a Little Too Late
You say you had a good time
But did ya' think it was for free - yeah
And how much did it get ya', all their flattery
And now you come back, runnin' for protection
You've been bitten by love and stung by rejection
You can't connect
What did you expect?
I'm still gettin' over you
Ah, thanks. Good to know I'm not senile yet. I can haz memory?
But compiling the kernel is the one area where Gentoo is exactly the same as every other distribution.
you had me at #!
Aw, you've finally learned that capitalization matters!
Not always. True, the word "windows" meaning display areas and the word "Windows" meaning a Microsoft operating system look different much of the time. But for one thing, they look the same at the beginning of a sentence. For another, lazy people often write "windows" when they mean "Windows", and confused replies routinely get interpreted as unfunny sarcasm and moderated down as Troll or Overrated.
I keep seeing your signature and thinking that it is a group of fans of the Honda CB 750 Nighthawk motorcycle. Disappointment soon follows. :(

Using your sig line to advertise for friends is lame.
The best choice is just to never, ever, sign up for a Facebook account.
Or if you insist on poking around in it a little, sign up for a totally fake account for a few hours. It's only interesting for that amount of time anyway.
