Famous British Autism Study an 'Elaborate Fraud'

Charliemopps writes "An investigation published by the British medical journal BMJ concludes the study's author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, misrepresented or altered the medical histories of all 12 of the patients whose cases formed the basis of the 1998 study — and that there was 'no doubt' Wakefield was responsible."

Has something to do with me having a bad reaction when I was a baby to vaccines. I almost died.
I think the concept of vaccines are good however when they stop putting mercury and other toxic additives then that will be another story. When a doctor looks me in the face and says mercury won't harm my kid I know he is lying to me, WHIMIS / OSHA both say no amount of mercury is safe for a child as it stops proper development of nerve sheaths in the brain. Now when the doc lies to me his credibility is shot and I can't trust him.

How, exactly? I'd struggle to count how many people I know, and I can't think of anyone who died as a result of contracting measles, mumps or German measles. I don't even know anyone who has a sibling that died of these diseases.

Everyone I know has had all three. When I was at school in the 1980s, we all had TB and polio vaccinations - separately, not all on the same day and certainly not a combined shot - and the girls were vaccinated against German measles because that actually *is* quite nasty if you contract it when you're pregnant. I knew a few people who died in car accidents. I knew one guy who fell off his boat and drowned, and another who shot himself. I even knew someone who died of meningitis, but no-one who ever died of measles or mumps.

      So, where's this big risk?

I can just about disagree with you on the notion that big pharma provides benefits for the money they make.

In my view, they peddle mostly crap solutions for problems that are best prevented. They prey on faults in human behavior. Such faults include the desire to relieve symptoms over addressing the cause and the desire not to change bad habits and behaviors.

Once I realized that the reason I was constantly suffering from allergies and getting sick were caused mostly by what I was eating and drinking, I stopped consuming those things... well "stopped" isn't the right word... more like "consume a great deal less with great awareness." I still cook with milk and add it to the occasional coffee drink and I consume a lot fewer carbs than ever before and of course, I quit taking medicines carelessly. (Do I own pain relievers? Yeah, I do... once in a while, I will need one if I eat badly, don't get enough sleep or other things that might lead to an impairment in my ability to work or think.)

Of course, that particular bit of vandalism was (according to the timestamps here and there) just ten minutes before your Slashdot post, and removed by another Wikipedia editor just three minutes later.

I don't think it's particularly novel or newsworthy that a Wikipedia article briefly contained some vandalism that was quickly repaired. I do find it a bit disappointing that your first reaction was to run to Slashdot and crow about it for cheap karma points. If you found the vandalism so distressing, why didn't you take some time out of your busy schedule to fix it before you came back here?

Mind you, while the statement was unpleasantly polemical and its tone inappropriate for an encyclopedia article and there are legally-loaded complications to the word 'murderer', it suffers from that damnable niggling quirk of also likely being true.

No, not even then... turns out, many vaccines are unnecessary. An example of this is flu vaccines for most people. I stopped accepting flu vaccines and haven't had the flu or a cold since. Even in cases where a flu vaccine is advisable, they are trying to predict which strains will be going around and they are frequently wrong!

They have no desire or intent to cure anything, but only to sell you high-margin drugs that will keep disease and death at bay - provided you keep buying them. Diabetes, AIDS, even the Common fraking Cold: they don't want a cure as they couldn't (or wouldn't be allowed to) charge enough to make up for decades of selling to - if you will - addicts. In other business circles, I believe this is called Vendor Lock-In. So at least in one facet, Junk Science and Big Pharma are equally morally bankrupt (and profitable).
